
Biographical Information
STAFFORD, Barbara
William B. Ogden Distinguished Service Professor, University of Chicago. She works at the intersection of the imaging arts, the visualizing sciences, and performance technologies, focusing on the body and embodied experience. Her recent work examines the ways in which the neurosciences inform assumptions concerning perception, sensation, emotion, mental imagery, and subjectivity. Her numerous books include Voyage into Substance: Art, Science, Nature and the Illustrated Travel Account, 1760-1840 (1984); Body Criticism: Imaging the Unseen in Enlightenment Art and Medicine (1991); Artful Science: Enlightenment, Entertainment and the Eclipse of Visual Education (1994); Visual Analogy: Consciousness as the Art of Connecting (1999); and most recently, Echo Objects: The Cognitive Work of Images (2007).
