Computer Shut-Down

Please shutdown ALL public and staff workstations prior to the electrical interruption on Saturday, October 25 at 10:00 p.m. to prevent damage to computers in Central Pattee and Paterno. Don't forget 503, 513, and 514.  For those of us in the offices, do this today!

More Statistics

ARL reference statistics will be taken during the week of November 2 - November 8.  I've put directions and samples in your mailboxes.  The forms are in the same folder as our EBSL daily statistics.  I've put the collections use statistics for the materials we shelve in that folder as well.  During the week of reference statistics, please keep our EBSL statistics, too, especially since we do the patron count every hour.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

More on TOEFL and GRE Books

As per Carol, the GRE and TOEFL books at the desk are never to be given special permission to circulate.  As mentioned yesterday, if they need to use the discs and they're having trouble at our workstations, they need to borrow a laptop from Reserves.

Training Sessions

Our extra staff training sessions will be on Tuesdays from 3:00- 4:30.  There will be no more than one per month.  I'll let you know the specific dates soon.

CDs and our terminals

Although this is the first complaint of a problem, there may be more.  When a patron tried to use a TOEFL CD this week, she couldn't download it and use it.  Carol talked to DLT and here's their response and solution:

"As long as I can remember we have never allowed students administrative rights on the public computers. My recommendation would be to have the patron check out a public laptop. They do have admin rights on them since they are reimaged each time they are returned. This would allow them to install what they need to run the CD."

Hopefully, they won't need any special password, since we don't have one to give out.

If you missed last night's debate (and everyone I talked to today did), here's one you shouldn't miss - it's hysterical!  Batman vs. Penguin Debate (from the old TV show - I think I was in second grade at the time!)

New Special Permission Loan Forms

The new special permission loan forms are finally here.  They should be a lot easier to use.  These are for any items which require permission from the librarians or full-time staff in order to circulate - basically reference items and unbound and bound journals which have been given permission to circulate for more than two hours.  For the time being, we will still circulate unbound journals for the default two hour loan here, using the plastic bags.

The forms are pretty straightforward.  First, check the appropriate loan period or write it in the blank provided.  If it's an unbound journal, write the due date in the blank.  The check "Education" and write the name of the person giving permission and the date.  Put that slip in the item and direct the patron to take it to Lending Services.  They will charge it out to the patron in Workflows.

I will put the forms out at the desk.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Scanning Instructions

Yesterday I forwarded instructions for using the new scanner.  I've put those directions at the scanner and copies at the desk.  I'll put them on the How Do I pages shortly.  If you get a chance, sit down at the scanner and practice.

Coming Soon

Soon we will be sending any special permission charges down to Lending Services to check-out on workflows.  After getting the special permission from a librarian or full-time staff member, you'll have a special slip to put in the item(s).  That slip indicates how long the material can circulate, who gave permission, etc.  This should make things a lot easier for all of us.

A reminder - when following closing procedures, please make a final sweep of the room, picking up materials, making sure all items are shelved, and picking up trash.  Eloise has noticed when she comes in in the morning, that it's not always done.

It's a pretty quiet day today, no news to report.  Don't forget to read yesterday's blog entry and e-mail me about the training time.  We need to get these scheduled.

Training Sessions

I'm still struggling to find a time for our extra training sessions. I'm going to propose Tuesdays from 3:30 - 5:00.  We won't have more than one a month, if that.  Is there anyone, with the exception of Paul, who can't come at that time?  If so, let me know and I'll try something else.

Lost and Found Reminder

Remember, all lost and found items are to be taken to Lending Services at the end of your shift.   They have a strict policy and processes for these kind of things; they get cranky, especially with IDs.  Patrons get confused about what desk to go to (even though we specify) and Lending gets confused since they don't have the ID at their desk

We got a new keyboard and remote in Room 514.  According to DLT, there's a doohickey (technical term) that looks a lot like a jump drive attached to the computer.  If the remote doesn't work, make sure the doohickey is plugged in.  If the mouse doesn't work, make sure the power is on - there's a switch on the bottom.
