Happy Halloween!

From I-Tech
Beginning November 1 at 7am to access your mail and your calendar you will log on to https://ucs.psu.edu/zimbra/
All PSU mail will be forwarded to UCS at that time.

Mail and Calendar will be unavailable from 530pm on October 31 until 7am on November 1 - do not access PSU mail in any way (including phones) during that time

Itech and ITS consultants will be visiting each area or calling campuses on Tuesday to verify that the migration was completed successfully.

If you need immediate assistance:

Call I-tech at 865-2378

Submit a helpdesk ticket - helpdesk.libraries.psu.edu

For non-emergency help please come to E1 Paterno to the I-Tech training lab for our UCS Open Lab

Wednesday, November 2-Friday, November 4 - 9am-5pm

Monday, November 7-Friday, November 11 - 9am-5pm

Notes for Tuesday:

1.       1.  By default the calendar is private - all migrated meetings come in as private

2.       2.  Spam filtering

Keep a close eye on the spam folder, in order to catch messages that inadvertently are sent to Spam

UCS does not "learn" like Thunderbird did

Spam automatically empties after 30 days

3.       Trash does not automatically empty

4.  It may take 1-2 days for resources to migrate, contact Susan Walker (slw1@psu.edu) with questions and issues regarding locations and resources.

The door to 513 is installed, the lock has been keyed to our master key, so we're ready to go.  We're going to put a sign with the hours outside the door and will eventually have a sign holder on the door itself for special hours - when Karla has a class in there or it's closed early when we can't man the desk and Life Sciences has to rove for us when we're normally here.

In all cases, when we close our desk, clear all patrons out of 513, turn out the lights, and lock the door.
Please go in about 10 - 15 minutes beforehand, let patrons know the room will be closing, and shelve any materials in there that need to be put away.

RefWorks Update
"Importing from RefWorks" instructions have been added as a tab to the other citation tool pages (Zotero, EndNote and Mendeley).
The RefWorks page (http://www.libraries.psu.edu/psul/researchguides/refworks.html) has been updated to indicate that access will cease on June 30 2012.    Individuals requiring one-on-one assistance can contact the Citation Tools Team (UL-CIT-TOOLS-HELP@lists.psu.edu).
In the spring semester we will begin contacting each RefWorks user to make sure they have successfully moved their citations.

Door for 513
The door for 513 gas been installed but the lock hasn't been keyed for our master key.  Don't close the door until further notice.  Eloise sent an e-mail message about this.

Headphone Receipts
When you charge out the headphones, you get a dialogue box that allows you to print a receipt for the patron.  The due date will be 24 hours later. Since we really don't want to encourage patrons to keep them that long, you can either print the receipt and tear it up or you can click "cancel" and not print one at all.  Eloise and I tried it today and clicking "cancel" does not cancel the transaction, only the print job.

New Procedure for Headphones
Just a reminder of the new procedure for headphones - we now check them out on Workflows.  The loan period is a default of 24 hours so you don't need to put in a manual due date/time.  Don't tell the patron(s) that, though.  And now they may keep the bags with them.  When returned, just discharge them in Workflows as you would anything else.  If a patron charges them out when you finish your shift at night, just tell the patron to leave them at our desk - Life Sciences will not discharge them - they will be discharged the following morning when the library opens.  If you have any questions, ask Eloise.

Modified Kit Procedure
If items are missing from a kit when checked out to a patron, make note of what's missing on a sticky note, not the card itself, and attach the sticky to the card.  When the item is returned, give it to Eloise.

STAAR Accounts
At a meeting yesterday we discussed the temporary access or STAAR accounts.  I used to be able to activate them but can't anymore.  We were told to refer any patrons needing them to the Lending Services (now Commons) desk.

ARL Statistics
We also discussed ARL statistics which begin on Sunday.  All statistics will be entered into Desk Tracker as we did last year.  This year, we will be collecting BOTH collection use (the materials we shelve) and reference statistics the same week.  Enter the collection use statistics as you shelve.  Enter the patron counts and reference questions as we always do but please be extra diligent.  If you answer questions in your offices, don't forget to record those transactions.

Self-Checkout Problems
Megan Gilpin called Lending about a problem with the self-checkout last week.  The person who answered told her to submit a helpdesk ticket, which Megan knew was NOT what she was supposed to do and she was absolutely right.  This comes from Chris Holobar:

Don't forget that if you've having trouble with a self-checkout, you can call Lending at 5-5429 to have one of our supervisors reboot the PC and place a helpdesk ticket (we'll place the ticket) so that we can track and, hopefully, solve recurrent problems.

I put the number on the list of important phone numbers and someone even highlighted it.

But, don't forget, it times itself out around midnight and resets itself in the morning, so if it goes offline late at night, don't do anything - you don't even need to put an "out of order" sign on it.  From what Eloise was told, they're working on changing the time that it goes offline to reflect the fact that we're now open later.  If I hear any news, I'll let you know.

Wireless Support
Recently Ann Snowman sent an e-mail regarding wireless support which I put on the blog.  I'm printing out that info and will put it out on the spinning rack at the reference desk.

Reminder - the UCS calendar and e-mail system are coming on October 31.  Please sign up for an overview session and hands-on training.  Sessions are all listed in Tech-Smart.  You can find the link to it in the "Resources" tab in the intranet.

Also, don't forget next Monday's training session - 4:30 - 6:00.  We'll review the EBSL homepage and please bring a tip or idea to share with the group!

Wireless Printing
Karla had an excellent question about wireless printing - basically, how?  Here's what I found out (with links):

The Pattee-Paterno Library has a new laptop/remote printing station (also called a release station).

  • Gateway Lab - first floor, Central Pattee, between the color printer and the scanning station
  • News & Microforms Library in the basement of West Pattee Library (next to the networked printers)
  • Life Sciences Library (4th floor Paterno).

To use the remote printing station:

Use your web browser to download the driver before printing (http://clc.its.psu.edu/printing/remote)

That links tells us:

How is it Done?

Download and run the appropriate package below on a non Lab computer. This will install a software package and and several printers called RemotePrinting, RemotePrintingHP, and RemotePrintingColor on the computer. Whenever a job is printed to one of these printers you will be asked for your access id which is then associated with the print job. The different print queues correspond to type of printer that you want to print the job on. RemotePrinting will format a job for Dell 5310 Printers. RemotePrintingHP will format the printout for HP laserjet printers and RemotePrintingColor formats the job for a HP Color LaserJet Printer.

To actually print the output, go to a location where there is a release station and the type of printer the job was formatted for and log on to the release station with your access id and password. The release station will display the print jobs it can print that have been associated with your access id. You can choose whether to print the job(s) at that location or delete them. If jobs are not printed or deleted within 12 hours they will be recycled into new bits. Only jobs that are released to be printed are charged for.

Machine Requirements

All packages require a working network connection to download or print. If there is a newer package on the web site your computer will try to update itself with the new package.

A PC with Windows XP or Vista or 7, 32bit

Download the distribution package PSURemotePrinting_for_W2K.exe

Window Vista 64 Bit and Windows 7 64 Bit

Download the distribution package PSURemotePrinting_for_X64.exe

  • Double click the downloaded file
  • Click the "Install" button at the bottom of the window that appears
  • Some anti virus packages may notice changes to the system a display warnings.

Known problems:

  • If 64 bit drivers for the same printer types are already installed they should be removed before installing this package.

Mac with Tiger or Leopard

Download disk image. PSU Remote Printing.dmg

Installation instructions:

  • Double-click the 'PSU Remote Printing" volume that should mount once the downloaded completes
  • Double-click the 'PSU Pharos Remote Printing' installer
  • Click the 'Continue' button
  • Click the 'Continue' button
  • Select the volume to install the package on
  • Click the 'Continue' button
  • Click the 'Install' or 'Upgrade' button
  • Enter an Administrator's Name and Password
  • Click the 'Close' button

There will now be two printers:

  1. 'RemotePrinting' for printing to Dell Black & White laser printers
  2. 'RemotePrintingColor' to print to HP Color Laser Printers

Selected the appropriate printer when you print. Note: since one of these new printers was the last printer created it will become the default printer. To set a different default printer, launch 'Printer Setup Utility' which is in the 'Utilities' folder in the 'Applications' folder.

I put a link to this on the EBSL homepage.

Laptop Printing
The Life Sciences Library (4th floor Paterno) now has a print release station.
This means students can print from their laptop computer to the network printer.
The News and Micro Library (ground floor Pattee) also has a release station.

No new news as of now.  The HVAC system is being worked on, so it's cold again.  OPP was just up here doing whatever it is they do, so maybe tomorrow will be warmer.  Just a heads up for people working tonight if you read this before you come in.

Computer Availability Widget
I've put a computer availability widget on the EBSL homepage which shows how many computers are available in EBSL at any given time.  Check it out!

From Ann Snowman
You may have noticed bright yellow jugs on the Welcome Desks.  They are ear plug dispensers to help mitigate noise from construction and other users.  So, if someone is in need of a little personal "quite zone" here is the solution.  No charge.--
