Desk Tracker info from the Desk Tracker team:
You may have noticed a few changes to the Desk Tracker page when you logged in this morning.

Above the "submit" button, you will see the phrase "Submission successful March 30, 2010, 2:15 pm  (cancel last entry)" . If you catch a mistake right after you make it, you can cancel that entry and re-enter the transaction.

For those of you with "report" access, you can now edit individual entries. Under "text reports" when you choose "reference", after you set up your report parameters, you will have the ability to edit an entry instead of having to delete the entry and start all over again.

When the updated documentation is available, we will post that to our Desk Tracker documentation page: https://intranet.libraries.psu.edu/home/toolboxes/desktracker.html

Please....
let us know if you run into any problems with the upgrade or with any other DeskTracker features.

Remember...
we will use Desk Tracker for ARL stats this spring

Questions...suggestions...requests for additional training...
contact desktracker_imp@psulias.psu.edu

From DLT

On Wednesday, May 12, 2010, DLT will be making changes to the authentication method used by the libraries' PC computers on the PSUL domain.  This change will include transitioning to a 'single sign on'.  This means that PSUL staff will no longer use the Library assigned password to log into PSUL PCs. Instead, you will sign on (login) to Library staff PCs with your Penn State issued access account user ID and password.  We will be phasing in select individuals to test with the use of hot teams throughout the library in order to ensure thorough testing prior to making the change.

Users whose computers are not on the PSUL domain (staff PCs at Altoona, Dickinson, Erie, Harrisburg, Hershey) or users that connect from offsite locations and wish to connect to Library servers (Roo, Workflows, Illiad, etc.) will need to adjust drive mappings.   In the past, drives have been mapped using your PSUL account and password ('PSUL\abc123' & PSUL password).  On May 12, 2010, you will need to map drives using your PSU access id and password ('dce.psu.edu\abc123' & Access password). Updated instructions will be available closer to the transition date.

Workflows accounts and passwords are not affected by this change.

Food and Drink
If you're eating (probably shouldn't be) or drinking (we all do this, I think) at the desk, please keep your containers under the desk or in a drawer somewhere.  Even though food and drink are allowed, it's a good idea to keep it low-key.

Kit Room
As you know from working evenings, weekends, and breaks, often parents bring their children into the kit room.  Unfortunately, they sometimes take multiple items from the shelves and then leave them lying around, put them in the incorrect containers, and, if they put them away, they put them anywhere on any shelf.  We've discussed some solutions, but would like your ideas and input.  If signage is the answer (only use one kit at a time and place it on a truck when finished, etc.) what should it say?  What can you enforce as you make your hourly rounds?

Annexing Project
The following sign is going to be posted on the empty shelves behind the EBSL reference desk:
Annexing Project
This section of material is being prepared for Annexing.  Please ask at Reference Desk for assistance.
Thank you.

Eloise is going to start putting materials from a variety of EBSL sections on those shelves. The materials are going to be annexed. If someone asks about the materials that are on the shelf and they would like to check anything out they are more than welcome to do that (if there is something there that someone needs it probably shouldn't be annexed).

If someone is looking for a particular item (especially from Instructional Materials) it's possible that it might be located in this annexing queue.

If someone asks you what annexing is...you can explain that we have a warehouse  or two called "the annex" where items that haven't circulated in a long time are sent to in order to create more space for newer items. Annexed items are labled in the CAT and can be ordered from the annex via the CAT. It usually takes just a couple of days. The patron is emailed that the item is in and can pick it up at lending.

If you have any other questions, ask Karla or Eloise!

Netlibrary e-book Information From Karla

Netlibrary e-book information

If someone calls or comes to the EBSL desk because they are having trouble with getting a Netlibrary e-book to open....here is the solution!

Most patrons may discover an e-book through the CAT. The patron should write down the title of the book, click out of the CAT, go to the A-Z database list, choose "N", scroll down to Netlibrary, and search for the title through the Netlibrary database. Going through the CAT creates an authentication problem, going through the Netlibrary database allows the authentication to occur.

Alan had a patron with this problem today, we called Helen Sheehy (who I think of as the "Penn State E-Book Queen"), and this is what she told us to do! Helen says that we are trying to avoid ordering e-books through Netlibrary because of this very problem, but the same issues do not occur with getting books through EBL and Ebrary.

Any questions??? Ask Karla. :-)

Question of the Week (due Thursday, April 1 - no fooling!)
According to this week's Interview newsletter:
1.  Who will be the library's new dean?
2.  Where does she come to Penn State from?
3.  What other Big Ten schools has she worked for?

AIM Buddy List
The AIM buddy master list has been updated.  Attached you will find a copy of the buddy list file, which can be used to update your individual and desk buddy lists.  The AIM buddy list can also be found on the shared - "K" drive in Roo in the "AIM buddy list" folder.
Visit the AIM FAQ page in the Service Desk Knowledgebase for an introduction to AIM and to view a listing of frequently asked questions (email forwarding, idle status, loading a buddy list, etc).

EBSL welcomes Diana Rosa and Kim Warren, our new reference assistants!

No Question of the Week until next week.  People are still recovering from Spring Break.  Next week, it's back to reality.  I put a new check sheet up by the mailboxes.  We're starting fresh.

Question of the Week - due Monday, March 15
This week we're exploring PsychINFO.
1. In an advanced search, what are the categories for PsycINFO Indexes & Limits?  (If you don't see this list, click "show" next to "more search options".
2.Using "browse",  what are the different methodologies you can search?
3. Again using "browse", what are the publication types you can search?

(Cutting and pasting is recommended,  but if you want to write them all down, have at it!)
