Please send me an e-mail saying you've read this.  I get the opinion that no one reads this anymore.  All responders will get a reward!

From DLT:

We are in the final week of classes when students are finishing up papers. In the past, DLT has seen  problems when a student opens a attachment in webmail which, by default, is saved to a temporary space on the computer. So when they save their file it is not saving it back to their webmail but to that temp space that gets erased after they log off. This means that any changes are lost.

So, the solution to this problem is for them to do a Save As in Word, Excel, etc. and have them save to either their USB key drive or network drive. DLT cannot retrieve lost work for them. Please help students avoid the stress, disappointment, and loss of time by reminding them to use the Save As function when working on public computers. Thanks in advance.

Oricle

I've fixed the gaps I found in the Oracle calendar.  I've printed out the schedule for the week and it's at the desk.  Hopefully, Oracle will behave itself for awhile.

Sorry about the goofy fonts.  I'm cutting and pasting from different sources.

Printing Change - Coming Soon
In the next week or so there'll be an announcement about changes in the ITS Printing Service; essentially this entails a much more convenient way for students to purchase pages beyond their 110 page quota. With the change, they'll be able to purchase pages online and won't have to go to a signature station (a pain if the student is in a lab and has to leave their seat to go and do this.) The announcement of this enhancement will read something like:

"Beginning May 12, 2008, students at University Park, Harrisburg and Carlisle will use their LionCash+ account to purchase additional pages for printing in ITS computer labs and classrooms. Using LionCash+ enables a quick and convenient way for students to purchase additional printing pages and replaces the old method of locating a signature station, agreeing to bursar billing and waiting for authorization to occur. With LionCash+ for Printing, students will continue to receive 110 subsidized pages each semester. However, as of May 12, additional pages can be purchased at any time online as long as there aresufficient funds in the LionCash+ account. There is no charge for the transaction. In addition, printing does not debit or affect the LionCash+ account and any unused purchased pages may be returned for credit to the LionCash+ account once a semester. Additional details are available at http://clc.its.psu.edu/Printing/ .

Faculty and staff will also be able to purchase pages online.  UP, Harrisburg and Carlisle will move to this new payment system together and once that's in place, focus will go to campuses who want to participate.

Phone Info

Saturday morning, 04/26/08 from 12:00AM to 5:00AM TNS will perform an upgrade on the VoIP system. This upgrade will require a reset of the phones and will affect inbound and outbound calls briefly, however will not affect any calls in progress.

Service may be affected starting on April 26, 2008 at 12:00AM. The estimated time of resolution is April 26, 2008 at 5:00AM.

Call Trace capability has been added to the University Park VoIP telephone system. By hanging up and dialing *57 immediately after receiving an obscene, harassing or life-threatening phone call, users of the University's Voice over IP (VoIP) telephone system can request a trace against the telephone number used to place the call. The service will only trace the last incoming call and details of the trace will be flagged for use only by University Police Services. Activating Call Trace does not automatically alert Police Services that an obscene, harassing or life-threatening call has occurred. Therefore, individuals are encouraged to notify University Police Services at 3-1111 if such a call has been received to begin an investigation. Detailed instructions for using Call Trace at University Park are outlined at http://tns.its.psu.edu/services/VOICE/features.html#calltrace.

The Oracle schedule is still a bit wonky about the summer hours.  I'll fix them next week.  Happy Hump Day!

Yesterday I spent 2 hours putting the summer schedule in Oracle and it did weird things - like leave big gaps in certain weeks.  Maybe it's just being weird, Meeting Maker used to do that - leave gaps only to fill them in later.  Anyway, just wanted to let you know in case you're looking at it.  If it doesn't improve by next week, I'll start from scratch (beware of loud, frustrated noises coming from my office).  At my supervisor's meeting this morning, some supervisors said they are using igoogle calendar.  I have an igoogle account and will play around with it.  That might be a better option for the future.

Have a safe weekend.  And for your Friday viewing pleasure, The Opening Theme from The Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.

Closing Procedures

Don't forget to make the final rounds when closing - straighten up and put books on trucks, etc.  That way, things will be ready for business first thing in the morning.

At today's meeting, we'll talk about Lost and Found procedures.  Just remember this - at the end of each shift, you MUST take any lost items turned in to you to Lending Services.  This is University and Library policy.  Lending has a system in place for dealing with lost items.

Changes in the Procedure for Requesting Annexed Material for Visitors

You will see changes in the following three places:

1) ILLiad:
After you log onto ILLiad, you will see a menu selection on the left.  At the very end of the selection is a section called "Library Staff Only."  Choosing "Request Annexed Item for Visitor" will take you to a request form which asks for visitor information such as name, email, library card number if they have a card, and pickup/delivery location.
The pickup locations for University Park are Lending Services for Pattee and Paterno Libraries and the Branch Libraries.  For copy, you can choose to have Annex Staff forward the copy directly to the visitor,  have Annex Staff post the article to your ILLiad account for you to forward to the visitor, or have Annex Staff send the copy to Lending Services via email or to the Branch Libraries via Ariel.

2) Webpage from the link "submit request for annexed material" in the CAT
The website from the link "Submit Request for Annexed Material" located at http://www.libraries.psu.edu/tas/collmaint/annexes.htm has been revised with the following information:
Service Desk Staff assisting Visitors:
1) Log onto ILLiad
2) Use the "Request Annexed Item for Visitor" option located under the "Library Staff Only" section - last choice on the main menu.
3) Follow Instructions on the displayed ILLiad webpage

There also is a link from that page to the Training Bulletin.

3) Access Services Training Bulletin #13
The procedure for requesting annexed material for visitors has been updated and is documented in Access Services Training Bulletin #13 entitled, "Requesting Annexed Material for Visitors"  located at https://intranet.libraries.psu.edu/home/access/trainingbulletins.html

If you see issues with public printing, please submit a help ticket with the following information so that CLC techs can look in the logs to determine the problem. It's very important to include these details. Thanks in advance for your help.
1) machine name or IP
2) user ID
3) date and the time that the problem occurred

Joyeux Poisson D'Avril!
