More Weather-Related Closing Information

I went to a Human Resources "Huddle" yesterday and one of the topics was weather-related closing. A few points are important:

1. We are considered non-essential, so if the university closes, except for non-essential personnel, we are closed.

2. If classes are cancelled but the university isn't officially closed, we are open.

3. If the libraries close over the weekend, it won't be announced on TV. You will be notified by one of us (Steven or me, most likely).

Oracle Calendar

Make sure you check your e-mail from yesterday for some links about the new Oracle Calendar coming in February. The survey, if you want hands-on training, is due this Friday.

Early Deadlines for Submitting Hours for the Holidays

Deadlines for wage:

Pay period 11/25/07 through 12/8/07 (paid 12/21/07) should be completed on Monday, 12/10/07, ASAP.

*Pay period 12/9/07 through 12/22/07 (paid 1/4/08) should be completed on Monday, 12/17/07, ASAP.

*In order to meet the early deadlines, hours should be projected. Adjustments can be made on succeeding payrolls if necessary.

Hoagies for In-Service Day

The In-Service Day Committee is selling Homan's Hoagies for In-Service Day. If you're interested in ordering one (or more!) Hoagies, the order form is on the table under the mailboxes. Checks are payable to Hilary Kleckner. I have to turn in the orders by December 14.

Libraries In-Service Day

This year's Libraries In-Service Training Day will be Friday, January 4, 2008. I encourage everyone to attend if you're in town. You should have a brochure in your mailbox - if not, there are extras on the table under the mailboxes. There are lots of interesting workshops and it's nice to be able to interact with colleagues from other units. And, as always, you will be paid for attending. Registration is online using TechSmart, opening this coming Monday (November 19) and closing Wednesday, December 12. Register early to make sure and get the workshops you prefer.

Temporary Access Accounts

The STAAs, which replace the RADs (temporary web/research account access for non-PSU patrons) are now available from the libraries, although none of us EBSLers are able to issue them. If a patron needs one, send him or her down to Lending Services or the Gateway, where there are people authorized to issue them.

Shift Checklists

The new shift checklists are now at the desk. Don't forget to fill them out and put them in my mailbox at the end of your shifts. They're meant to be very simple, just a way of keeping track of how various projects are moving forward.

Job Posting

I sent the job posting that we discussed at the meeting yesterday to Wendy today. If you know of anyone who'd be interested, tell them to keep checking the library's HR job listing web site. Hopefully, it will be up very soon.

Public Printer

A patron complained yesterday about not being able to print two-sided copies. I asked the rover this morning and he said our printer doesn't have that capability. The patrons, though, get a price break. They're only charged half a page for a full page.

We went from summer to winter overnight. Here's the library information on weather-related closings:
When classes are delayed, or an altered schedule for activites unrelated to classes is announced due to weather, the Libraries will generally follow Penn State's revised schedule.

In the event of a campus closing, the library on that campus will also close. For additional information on weather-related campus closings, check here:

If there's more information you need, and I have it, I'll call you. Sometimes, while we're closed part of the day, we open for the evening shift.

Winter Break Hours

It may seem early, but the winter break will be here before we know it. Look at the hours for finals and the winter break hours and be thinking about what hours you'd like to work. We'll work out a final break schedule at our December scheduling meeting (Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 3:30) if not before.

And a reminder - our next training session is this coming Tuesday (November 13) at 3:30. The topic is children's literature. There will also be a brief demonstration on the bestest and neato-est way to cover books.

Extended Hours

Your help is needed to staff the Libraries during extended study hours for final exams this semester: Wednesday, December 12th through Thursday, December 20th.

This paid opportunity is available to wage employees from any unit at University Park. Faculty and staff may flex or extend their workweek according to established protocols.

Our regular desk hours do not change during this time period. These hours would be in addition and participation is voluntary (and appreciated.)

Time Change This Weekend

Receipt Printer Problem

The receipt printer didn't work for me this morning. I had to re-reconfigure the printer. Remember we did this before? At least once? Before you start your next shift, charge something out and see if it works for you. If not, here are the steps to follow (I've sent them in an e-mail and will also put them next to the circ terminal):

1. Log on to workflows.
2. On the menu bar go to file, print set-up, and select print to a printer.
3. Select the Epson TM-T88IV from the drop-down menu.
4. Click OK.
5. Go to Preference, Peripherals, Receipt Printer, and check Receipt printer available.
6. Under the Basic Tab:
a.) In the receipt printer field, select the Epson TM-T88IV from the drop-down menu.
b.) Check No builtin raster driver and Cut paper supported.
c.) Be sure the fields following ASCII sequence for cut paper display 27,105,48.
d.) Then UNCHECK both Cut paper supported and No builtin raster driver.
7. Under the Attributes tab:
In Font field, select Arial Unicode MS, Regular, 12.
8. Click OK.
9. Click O.K.

With any luck, we won't have to do this yet again. But I'm not holding my breath!
