Adding a Pages Widget


Introduction

A Pages Widget is an on-screen tool which is used to organized your home page by allowing the user to add pages to the main sidebar.  The goal is to allow for greater organization on a blog site.  This widget removes tabs from the main page bar and moves them to the main sidebar to prevent the website from becoming cluttered.


Note: If you don't have a Pages Widget in your main sidebar, you must create one.


Materials and Time

·         A computer with internet access

·         10-15 minutes of free time

Preparation

1.       Log in to the blog site at www.blogs.psu.edu

2.       Open the main dashboard located at the top of the page


To complete the task, we have provided a video tutorial and set of instructions.  After you have watched the video, follow the instructions to complete the task on your website.

Creating the Pages Widget

1.      Copy the code for the Pages Widget.

2.      On your blog dashboard, open Design, and select Widgets.

3.      Select "Create Widget Template"

4.      If you want to personalize the widget, choose any name for the title in place of the default: "Pages"

5.      Paste the code in the from above in the provided area under the widget name.

6.      In the 2nd line of code, change the word "Pages" to "*your title*"

7.      Save Changes

8.      Publish

 

After completing these steps you have now created the Pages Widget.  It is now ready to be added to your blog site.

 

Adding the Pages Widget

1.      On your blog dashboard, open Design, and select Widgets.

2.      Click on the "Main Dashboard" widget set.

3.      Locate the "Pages" widget in the "Available Widgets"

4.      Drag the "Pages" widget to the "Installed Widgets"

5.      Save  Changes

6.      Publish

 

After completing these steps, a new Pages Widget has now been created and is located on your blog site main sidebar on the right side of the page.

 

Glossary

Widget- A program that performs some simple function, such as providing a weather report or stock quote, and can be accessed from a computer desktop, webpage, mobile phone or subscription television service.
