-Dan gave us some ideas on different topics to use such as socio-political problems
-we did a tag cloud exercise and there is a website called www.wordle.net to create tag clouds.
-www.flickr.com is a photo sharing website where we can get images from
-in flickr you can go to www.flickr.com/creativecommons/ and that will give you a list of information and different copyright stipulations for creative common licensing.

Word clouds help to plan out what ideas you want to repeat in your project.
The biggest words are the ones that you want to be more prevalent and most repeated.
Wordle.net is a really cool website that can help you to generate word clouds about any kind of text.
Creative commons licenses allow you to use or change other peoples work.
Flikr.com/creativecommons is a website to use to search for pictures with a creative commons license.
The search is at flikr.com/search or is found at the bottom of the page.
To search for creative commons, use advance search and click on creative commons license, and then type in key words.
Flikr photos can be used for still images to use in your videos, which could be good with narration or music etc.
wikimedia commons is a search for freely usable media files for which anyone can use. This website is really useful for still photos.
If the image is in the public domain, you can use it freely and manipulate it.
You need to watch for creative commons licenses that do not allow you to manipulate the photo.
"remixing" means changing the video. for example, adding to the photo or mashing it up for your video.
On wikimedia commons, there are categories, which is an easy way to get to all the images on a specific topic.
You cannot reuse a famous piece of music in your video because that is a copyright infringement.
There are some freesound resources: freesound.org has free sound effects, tags finds all different topics, and there is a search function.
If you are looking for music. ccmixter.org is a good website for songs. The picks area gives you a good idea of what is popular and what a lot of people are using.
These are original works which people put up for you to use on ccmixter.com. This is good for background music.
Internet Archive- archive.org. Has a moving images archive and stuff you can reuse in your project. Open source movies has possible good ideas to get started, but you cant use these for the project.

-probably won't be able to use youtube very much
-internet archive is good for finding clips as well
-be wary of open source movies page
-internet archive makes it very easy to download content
Dan and Emily were very friendly. They were helpful and they provided us with many sources that we could draw from for our Sparky awards. They took us through Flickr, Wikimedia Commons, FreeSound, ccMixter, Internet Archive Video, and Public Domain Flicks. I really liked the Wikimedia Commons website. If I do not utilize this website for my video I will most likely utilize it for my web resume. They also touched more on Creative Commons. We had a fire drill at the beginning of class that allowed us to get some fresh air and do some outdoor brainstorming.
Core of video based around socio-political information
Digital divide, open access, net neutrality (upload as quickly as download)
wordle.net- use words to make random clouds
IMAGES
flickr- find pictures to incorporate in video
- creative commons usually doesn't need permission to bed used/no permission necessary (http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/)
- advanced search can help you find exactly what you are looking for (specifics)
- have to apply a creative commons license to final Sparky Awards video
wikimedia commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org)
- media files, not great for video and sound
- pictures have the highest quality
- check for permission on using the image (bottom)
- be respectful of the image; do not alter
AUDIO
FreeSound:(www.freesound.org)- no music, but has sound effect
- navigate through left hand side (tags or random sample)
ccMixter:(http://ccmixter.org)

Value of sharing information > Addressing problems
Tip: Core of video be based around a socio-political issue
Topics:
Access to research, new opportunities in sharing information...social web (web 2.0), digital divide (have and have nots of internet: e.g. Africa > They have access to internet over phones but not computer), net neutrality (being able to upload as fast as you can download information..."freedom of speech")
Not a good idea to use Youtube videos or music because they are not licensed under creative commons

Resources to use when making the video:
Flickr.com > "Creative Commons" vs "Copy right"
- Can use creative commons' works without asking for permission
- Flickr provides photos that are easier to use than copy right works
- Flickr.com/creativecommons > describes what the different symbols mean (Lets you know under what circumstances you can use the photo)
> Give credit at the end of the video (username/URL/title of image...as much information as possible so other people can find the photo again)
>Bottom of page: "Search"

Flickr
Wikimedia Commons - database of over 5 million freely usable media files.
Creative Commons - different symbols mean different things (licenses). Very important. It lets you know what you can and can not use.
At the end of the video have a black screen with credits.
We need to decide how we want others to use our video once we're done with it. How do we want to apply a specific license to our video?
some creative commons license might not let you "remix" the image.
Contact whoever posted an image. It won't hurt.
Freesound.org - its strength is in sound effects and ambient noises.
For music, use ccMixter.org.
Can use "open source movies" for ideas stylistically. (in Internet Archive website) This website contains many public domain and Creative Commons-licensed movies.
Full length movies -- on full domain flicks website.
Understanding Creative Commons is very important when making this video since we will be licensing our own.
- Use a social or political issue to make it more topical
- Topics include Web 2.0, people without access to the internet, open internet/net neutrality
- Tag Clouds shows prevalence of a specific word in a text
- wordle.net is a tag cloud generator
- Creative commons allows you to use works without asks for permission

1. world.net- makes a world cloud out of a document.
2. flickr.com/creativecommons- could also use this site to have digital images printed.
3. Wikipedia has picture too, but be careful on how to use it.
4. In general be careful of all the images you would use and make sure you find out copyright information. (This isn't an issue for my video since we create the video all our own and only use content that can be found on the club's website.)
5. Freesoundproject.org lots of sounds, but not songs. (example breaking glass)
6. ccmixter- remix of songs that maybe wanted in your video.
7. Might be interesting to add video to your video. Example: have a friend saying one word and putting together a sentence from a bunch of different people.
8. archive.org- (moving images > open source) good place for ideas, but probably not useful for your video
9. youtube would also be a good resource to get ideas flowing

Sparky Award prompt, strike home at the idea of the value of information sharing. Social or political focus when it comes to sharing information. Who can access. Knowledge is a public good. Privacy and facebook.
How could the Willard Preacher get out his good message: spam, thon, find a metaphor.
Use an interesting idea to dramatize an information sharing issue.
The word cloud was helpful for organizing our ideas. I think that it's a good idea to use photos with animation for places where we can't find video footage. The navigation of Flickr and Wikimedia Commons was helpful for me because I'm not very good with computers. I think the free sound project website will be good for the kind of funny sound effects and music that we want in our video.

A hook can draw people in, but try to relate it to the topic.
Word clouds can be used to help brainstorm.
Creative commons licensed materials are useful for finding usable resources that aren't personal photo or video materials.
There are different types of creative commons licenses; note the difference in these when looking to use images. It is also important to know the licenses when submitting videos for the Sparky awards.
You'll want to license your own video.
Can search for information based on creative commons licenses, like in Flickr.
You will want to use audio in the video, but you can't use most songs due to copyrights. Use the internet to find free sound effects or music.
Using videos will encounter some of the same problems as music, in that you need to own the content to use it. Search internet archive for movies and older clips in the public domain. You can then splice images to help make video.
Public domain flicks has full length movies.
Take advantage of internet tutorials and the digital commons website for helping to make movies and cite resources.
The handout from class has all the important links for finding information.
1. using wordie.net to improve our sparky project topic

Framework for a successful video
Core of video based around socio-political information
Digital divide, open access, net neutrality (upload as quickly as download)
wordle.net- use words to make random clouds
IMAGES
flickr- find pictures to incorporate in video
- creative commons usually doesn't need permission to bed used/no permission necessary (http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/)
- advanced search can help you find exactly what you are looking for (specifics)
- have to apply a creative commons license to final Sparky Awards video
wikimedia commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org)
- media files, not great for video and sound
- pictures have the highest quality
- check for permission on using the image (bottom)
- be respectful of the image; do not alter
AUDIO
FreeSound:(www.freesound.org)- no music, but has sound effect
- navigate through left hand side (tags or random sample)
ccMixter:(http://ccmixter.org)
- creative commons licensed
- mostly original works
- can stream to see if you like it and then download
VIDEO
Internet Archive Video: www.archive.org/details/movies
- open source movies
- can use any movie not under copyright
Public Domain Flicks: www.publicdomainflicks.com
- full length movies in public domain

How to create a successful video:
Value of sharing information > Addressing problems
Tip: Core of video be based around a socio-political issue
Topics:
Access to research, new opportunities in sharing information...social web (web 2.0), digital divide (have and have nots of internet: e.g. Africa > They have access to internet over phones but not computer), net neutrality (being able to upload as fast as you can download information..."freedom of speech")
Not a good idea to use Youtube videos or music because they are not licensed under creative commons
Word Cloud > "Brainstorm"
www.wordle.net
Resources to use when making the video:
Flickr.com > "Creative Commons" vs "Copy right"
- Can use creative commons' works without asking for permission
- Flickr provides photos that are easier to use than copy right works
- Flickr.com/creativecommons > describes what the different symbols mean (Lets you know under what circumstances you can use the photo)
> Give credit at the end of the video (username/URL/title of image...as much information as possible so other people can find the photo again)
>Bottom of page: "Search"
-advanced search
-Select: "Only search within Creative Commons" & "Find content to modify, adapt, or build upon"
Sparky Awards requires you to add a "Creative Commons" license to your video
> How do you want other people to reuse this information?
http://commons.wikimedia.org
>Images, videos, and sounds
>Featured pictures = highest quality
>Area below picture tells you about the permission
-public domain means you can use it
>copyright has expired
-Look out for those that you cannot re-edit
>putting in a video is considered a "remix" and is illegal
>If you are being respectful of the image, you are probably ok
>It never hurts to contact the owner
>Bottom of website - similar photos

Made a word cloud.
Resources to use while making videos...
Use type cloud to help brainstorm information for the video. (wordle)
You can't use the original recording of music but you can do a rerecording (your own version) in the video.
You can use ccmixter for background music to the video.
Freesound is good to use for sound effects.
wikimedia commons is good to find images that are on the public domain which means the copywright has expired and you can use freely.
use the internet archive to find old information that may no longer be on the internet and it is on the public domain.
Use Flickr and search under a creative commons liscence to find videos and images to incorporate into your sparky video.
Make sure to give proper credit at the end of the sparky video.
Make sure to encorporate some sort of social issue into the Sparky video with sharing information.
use public domain flicks to see full movies that you can download without restriction. These are movies in the public domain.
In youtube.com, search the imovie tutorial to see a video on how to use imovie.
On the Penn State Libraries page, you can use the link How Do I... to see how to properly cite a bibliography.
- Copyright forces you to ask for permission
- Just put as much information as possible when citing a work
- Pay attention to specific restrictions on creative commons
- Wikimedia commons is another resource that often has public domain works
- Wikimedia allows you to search by category
- Freesound.org has sound effects, not music
- ccmixter.org is a good source of music
- archive.org allows you to find old websites

word clouds are pictures displaying words in sizes corresponding to the frequency they are mentioned.
wordle.net can generate word clouds using a block of text.
Use flikr.com to find pictures available for use through creative commons.
Wikimedia commons connects content together. A good resource for pictures. Also has video and audio.
thefreesoundproject.org provides sound effects for anybody to use.
The psu libraries website provides information on citing your sources and writing style guides.
ccmixter.org has more creative commons media. good for background music.
archive.org offers useful information and ideas in the form of movies, pictures, and texts.
Lastly, youtube is a good resource for tutorials and inspiration.
My notes:
- Try to have core based around socio-political information
- wordle.net to create tag clouds (use for visual image in video or even blog post)
- flickr.com: Black screen with credits at the end of a video
*Creative Commons: you're allowed to use it in
your work w/o asking permission
*Copyright: Requires explicit permissiong from the
person who created it
- Wikemedia Commons: for images, have area that will tell you if it's copyrighted or not. As long as image isn't modified it should be ok to use it if it's in the public domain.
*Different Categories of images: an easy way to get
to all images available on that topic
-Using music: Can't use original recording of a song b/c it's copyright infringment
*www.freesound.org: for sound effects and ambient
noises
*ccmixter.org: creative commons license
Head to picks area if you're looking for music.
- archive.org: click on moving images tab at top left
*Ideas- "open source movies" link or youtube.com
*Arts and music link for images
- youtube.com: use for tutorials for imovie (making an interesting intro)
- www.libraries.psu.edu/psul/researccguides/matbytype/citationstyles.html- page for citation style guide
1. world.net- makes a world cloud out of a document.
2. flickr.com/creativecommons- could also use this site to have digital images printed.
10. Can find iMovie tutorials on youtube.
11. Libraries have sites for citing information, may need to do that. Need more information from Jeanette.
12. creative commons work room...

They also led us in an activity with word clouds to emphasize the important details of an idea or topic.
Having a hook will create an engaging video.
Activity: Emily clouding. Tag cloud.
The word cloud was helpful for organizing our ideas. I think that it's a good idea to use photos with animation for places where we can't find video footage. The navigation of Flickr and Wikimedia Commons was helpful for me because I'm not very good with computers. I think the free sound project website will be good for the kind of funny sound effects and music that we want in our video.
wordle.com makes tag clouds (word size related to frequency).
flickr.com/creativecommons free and legal to use photos.
commons.wikimedia.org free and legal media (photos, videos, sounds...)
freesound.org for free sound effects.
ccMixter is CC music files and remixes.
archive.org/details/movies for free archived movies.
publicdomainflicks.com full length films that are out of copyright and free to use.
The brainstorming process was very helpful in helping my idea evolve into a more concrete idea. Also wordle.com is interesting to say the least.
Notes

The Sparky prompt is looking for information sharing issues -- try to relate this topic with social or political context.
