WHAT’S HAPPENING HERE Highlighting a completed internship-to-hire in creative marketing at The Penn State Electro-Optics Center in Freeport, PA, this e-portfolio provides a comprehensive overview of the internship while also outlining Jo’s professional media, writing and organizational skills & development. Jo provides 100% of this site’s design and maintenance and, in addition to marketing full-time with the Penn State Electro-Optics Center, she freelances in writing, proofreading, still photography & video production.
VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS
Internship: June 3-August 22, 2008 B.A.: Communications, Penn State
When it took on Jo—journalism option, former student newspaper reporter and Editor-in-Chief—The Electro-Optics Center (EOC) raised eyebrows. “Journalist?” co-workers asked. “How did you get in here?”
A security facility housing equipment requiring impossible-to-obtain clearances to even casually photograph, they hired her anyway, to help the EOA regroup, revise its Charter and re-envision its potential.
The Electro-Optics Alliance (EOA)
After WWII, Harvard declined to renew its Department of Defense & Naval contracts and the bid fell instead to the landlocked Pennsylvania State University. |
Over 50 years later, in 1999, the EOC was conceived of and, with it, greater networking among U.S. electro-optics companies in the newly global tech market was promised with the Electro-Optics Alliance.
As EOA administrator, the EOC regularly sends out requests for white papers, proposals and other requests to some 400 U.S.-based EOA government, academic and industrial members specializing in:
· Lasers and/or Laser Systems or Materials/Components · Sensors and/or Detectors or Materials/Electronic Components · Fiber Optics, Photonics & Engineering or Materials for Optics · Crystal Growth and/or Design/Fabrication/Processing · Education, Training & Support in Electro-Optics Disciplines
… & The EOA Project’s Primary Challenge
Acquisitions, mergers and other corporate dissolutions occur frequently in the electro-optics business. To bring cohesion to its diffracted, outdated database, two internships were created under the auspices of the EOA. |
The EOA Project ’s long term goals are future-looking, the primary focus fulfillment of a charter meant to pool, promote and protect U.S. electro-optics companies in a vast, unpredictable and often volatile global tech market. A decade-old database was the point of origin for two goals:
· Database Currency; Points-of-Contact Efficiently Maximized · Enhanced Visibility & Promotion of EOA Member Companies
My Job: Enhancing Visibility & Promoting EOA Member Companies |
Project Supervisor, Assistant to the Director for Program Development Brian Del Vecchio, first conceived of the notion of a looping video feed that would represent member companies’ capabilities.
To debut at the August 14, 2008 EOA meeting and then to be marched out at trade shows, the presentation was meant to serve as the ‘front end’ of the project’s larger goal: the update and maintenance of the database.
As with all good ideas, the front end began with a visual clue: Brian’s conception included a quad chart with contact information and “member since” listing in one quadrant; corporate logo in a second; picture efficiently conveying company capabilities or specializations in a third and a capabilities “key terms” listing in the fourth.
My final visual rendering puts the “member since” date at the most focal, stationary and binding position possible; visual intent is clear: Pride in association and legacy.
But the functionality still serves a greater purpose: Revitalization of the EOA through a new, applied interpretation of the EOC’s mandate. |
