Finals are Coming

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Hey readers,

Around this time of the year students and teachers start get ready for finals week. Since I am sure some of my readers are freshmen I went outline and found some helpful tips to "Survive Finals Week".

Here you go,

1. Don't panic (make too much of the final).

The first thing you should do is to check what the final is worth in each course. Remember, it is only one component of your final grade. If it is worth 20% or less, you probably won't be able to bring your final grade up or down by more than one grade level (e.g., B to B+), unless you perform extremely better or worse than you have on other exams and assignments during the semester.

2. Don't be too relaxed (make too little of the final).

On the other hand, you should try to do as well on the final as you possibly can. Furthermore, sometimes the final is a big part of your final grade (30% or more), in which case it is more likely to make a significant difference in your final average. It is better not to go into the final with the idea, "I just need to get x number of points to keep my B (or whatever it is) average." It may not be possible to calculate this accurately anyway, since teachers sometimes compute things like participation grades at the very end.

3. Make time for "renewing" activities.

This is NOT the time to stop exercising or doing other things that you find enjoyable. Pace yourself! You will study more effectively if you spread things out and take breaks. But watch the proportions here. Beware of doing 15 minutes of studying followed by a two-hour break to play a video game!

4. Use an effective study method.

The key to effective retention is repetition, and not overloading your brain (it can only absorb so much in an hour). Whatever you do, don't do it all in one long cramming session. Which brings us to:

5. Get enough sleep.

Don't pull an "all nighter." You will do better if you are rested, and cramming often leads to a superficial and confused knowledge of the material you have studied.

There is a reason why sleep deprivation is used as torture. Failure to follow #4 and 5 can lead to writing nonsense on exams. Teachers often fall off their chairs laughing at some of the silly statements that appear on finals.

6. Resist the urge to party on "off" days.

Instead, if you have a break in your exam schedule, use it to get a head start on the exams coming up. This can be a time to catch up on missed reading, or to complete Step 1 of "Immediate Preparation" in my study method. REMEMBER: if you party, you will need to recover! And research has shown that people who engage in high-risk drinking deaden their cognitive skills (ability to recall and organize information, etc.)

7. Arrive on time for the exam.

Be especially careful about setting your alarm the night before. Save yourself the anxiety and embarrassment of arriving late. Needless to say, you may also need every minute of the exam period to finish the exam.

8. Follow the rules of good exam taking.

Click here for some tips on taking an essay exam.

9. Don't worry about others finishing earlier than you.

This could mean ANYTHING. It often means these students have written a mediocre or poor exam. Take the time YOU need.

10. When the exam is over, let it go!

Forget it! Move on to the next one, or go enjoy the break! If you do have major concerns, make an appointment to see your professor at a mutually convenient time.

All of this information was taken from <http://www.vpul.upenn.edu/ohe/library/mental/finals.htm> but I can honestly say they are the best tips I have found online.

Good luck and remember to study hard!!

Papers and Projects

Hey readers,

It is no surprise that this semester is almost over but the school work is still coming. So far I have turned in a 10 page paper all about the immigration history in the United States. I have taken two quizzes and one exam but I am not done. On Friday I have a group presentation in my philosophy class on whether adultery is immoral or not. Then, I have a 20 page group paper due in my communications class focusing on the health care propaganda seen recently in the United States. I then have a legal memorandum due on Wednesday but when I am finally done with all these due dates finals come around. I have 3 weeks left in this semester but it is still not time to relax because all these final grades are meant to lift my grade up before finals. Almost everyone I have spoken to have the same busy schedule this last period but spirits are still high for the summer. Right now the only way I getting through this ridiculous schedule is that in 3 weeks I will be back home in Miami, Florida with my family for the entire summer. Beaches and good food!!

Thank you for reading,

Good luck on all your upcoming assignments.

Easter Weekend

Hey readers,

This weekend is Easter and I have my suite all to myself. Campus is pretty much empty with the amount of people that go home for this holiday but I am not complaining. I have my room to myself and I love it since it only happens like two times a semester. This way I can have the t.v on as long and as loud as I want without disrupting my roommate or sleep as much as I want without hearing anyone walking around the suite. The parking lots are extremely empty and campus is quite almost anywhere you go. The weather continues to shock everyone since last year around this time it snowed. However, it is 77 degrees outside and it couldn't feel any better. T-shirts with shorts with sandals are being used by almost every college student so the idea of summer being right around the corner feels better everyday. This last month is going to fly by with all the deadlines coming soon but the amount is always worth it in the end.

Beautiful Weather

Hey readers,

Even though this time during the school year seems to be the busiest because the semester is so close to an end. There are seniors trying to get all their paperwork done for graduation along with finding jobs or hearing back from graduate schools. There are many students waiting for decisions from summer internships or programs they have applied for. This is also scheduling season where all students are trying to figure out their classes for next year and are trying to figure out their credits in the future. Above all else this when the last exams and papers are given to students as a final push to raise their final grade excluding final exam. However, during all this chaos the weather makes everything a little bit better. The idea of it being 77 degrees outside cannot stop me from reminding myself how close summer is. I cannot wait until the summer and getting a chance to go back home!! Although I can't go to Presque Isle right now and enjoy the good weather as much as I would want to I still love it!

I hope everyone is enjoying the weather and surviving these last few weeks!!

Thank you for reading,

Jennifer
