JASON MARSHALL JOHNSON: February 2008 Archives
About two weeks after I heard about the ZiPhone jailbreak I took a look back at ijailbreak.com. You might remember this site as the home of the 13 year old developer who was responsible for jailbreaking my old iPod Touch. I had been reluctant to try another jailbreaking method after my iFuntastic fiasco, but I decided to give Ari X's OS X utility a try. In less than 60 seconds my iPhone was jailbroken, had installer.app on my spring board, and has zero problems.
I have experienced the typical "Can't Connect to Youtube" error, but I expected that and with the help of a few blogs I should be able to have it up and running. For now, I'm content to have my iPhone with my root access!
*UPDATE* as of February 26 (just about 24 hours after my Jailbreak) my iPhone experienced the following issues:
--No Youtube Connection (expected)
--When calling others, connection will drop or will not connect
--When calling others, iPhone will automatically turn on the speaker phone
--iPhone will not go into Recovery/DFU mode
--Touch Screen becomes unresponsive
--Spring Board crashes and will not reload
I tried to restore to 1.1.3 and got an error, at this point, iPhone bricked
I then used ZiPhone to send iPhone into Recovery mode (this worked)
I downloaded 1.1.4 and clean installed, iPhone has worked perfectly for 2 weeks
I stumbled upon a very nice (and extensive) list of modifications for Mac OS X today. I didn't have time to try out every one of the modifications on my Macbook, but one really struck me as interesting. When I was a Freshman I was stuck in Windows World and could only attempt to force my Inspiron 9300 to look like a Macintosh. One of my favorite programs was called Konfabulator, a widget engine which soon became Yahoo! Widgets. With Konfabulator, I could put widgets onto my desktop (kinda like Vista's "sideboard").

There you have it, enjoy! By the way, check out the video below: "The Count Censored". It is one of the funniest videos that I have seen in a while.
When I got my first Mac I really enjoyed Dashboard, but I soon got tired of not being able to have some of my widgets work while I was using other applications. With the below Terminal code, you can drag your widgets onto your desktop. My only wish is that i could move the widgets behind my active window, but that is a minor tradeoff in my eyes.
Open Terminal and paste in the following code: defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES
You will have to restart after you apply this change. Once you have done this, open Dashboard and select a widget with your mouse. Begin to drag this widget around the dashboard and simultaneously press f12 (or your specific dashboard hotkey). Your widget should now be on you desktop. If you want to remove the widget, simply repeat the process but start from the Desktop and press f12 to get back into the dashboard.

I remember the first day that my bosses showed me the iTunesU concept for Penn State and told me that I would be working on some of the easy data entry and administration that is inherent of the program. I thought to myself "What if all of my professors used this platform, how cool would it be to have this content right at my fingertips?" Almost two years later I am finally getting a chance to use iTunesU in my Music 462W course. There are 3 professors for this course (art, literature, and music) and things can get a little jumbled together at times.
We were given 6 podcasts to listen to (supplement materials and interviews) and asked to write a reaction paper on the audio. It was very nice to be able to listen to the content while walking to my car, and extremely helpful to run the playhead of each podcast back and forth to get the exact information that I needed. Despite all of this, I still wrote the paper an hour before class.
I'm finally getting around to moving my 3.3 blog to MT 4. Hoping to have old and new content back up asap!
