About

LA 200 has two simple purposes:  to introduce students to the possibilities available to them in the Business and the Liberal Arts minor; and to make students enrolled in the minor more aware of the career options available to them--and more aware of how they might prepare themselves for those opportunities.  The course ensures that students are familiar with the curricular options available to them in the minor (including internship opportunities) and overviews the services of the Penn State Career Center; but the course in particular features personal testimony by successful Liberal Arts alumni who will share their backgrounds, experiences, and insights.  The appearances of the alumni will also provide students with the opportunity to practice and develop important communication skills that are essential to success in the workplace because the course will be organized as a series of weekly "shows."

Basically what we want you to take away from this course is an appreciation for what possibilities are out there for you, what you need to do to land that first job, and what you will need to do in order to be viewed by your new organization as a valuable employee. (For those of you heading for graduate school, in the short term or later, it should help you to clarify your goals and be instructive in terms of how to present yourself on both paper and during an interview should the grad school require an in-person visit.)  We will review skills and abilities that facilitate organizational performance and consider the role of education, specifically the Business and the Liberal Arts minor but other educational experiences too, in preparing individuals for professional careers.  The hope is that you will see how all the hard work you have been doing in school translates into marketable skills and abilities and experiences.
