Introduction

Art 211 provides art students with an introduction to the critical study of new media and digital art works and to the cultural and social issues that influence how audiences perceive, interact with, and are influenced by them. The development of students' critical thinking through class, activities, discussions, and course projects is given particular emphasis.

The content of Art 211 focuses primarily on the conventions, language, aesthetics, and history employed by artists in the creation of new media/digital art. The course also considers the cultural implications that new media/digital art works and practices have for contemporary society and the culture of the United States.

Site Menu

The Site Menu presented to the left provides links to the different areas of the course web site. Most areas of the site are public with the exception of links to file downloads and online readings.

  • Syllabus: The course syllabus contains information about the course content, textbooks, projects and grading and attendance policies.
  • Schedule: The course schedule provides details about the topics to be discussed for each class session, assignments, and assigned readings.
  • Readings: The readings section provides access to online readings required for the course.
  • Projects: This is the section of the site where all class projects and assignments will be posted. In addition, there is a detailed explanation of grading policies and characteristics. The projects area is updated frequently since assignments are generally not posted until several days before they are assigned in class.
  • Resources: These links provided in the resource section are intended to serve as additional sources of information. There are several categories including links to: writing resources, information about artists and topics studied in the course, online museums, useful online publications, and course-related downloads.
  • Connections: The connections area is the place to go if you want to contact the instructor, a fellow classmate, or the School of Visual Arts officet. The connections site also provides a portal to the class ListSERV, a class-wide mailing list that can be used by anyone in the course to send messages about something they believe will be of interest to Art 211 students.
