Other Definitions of Verification and Validation

AIAA

The AIAA has published a ”Guide for the Verification and Validation of Computational  Fluid Dynamics Simulations” (AIAA G-077-1998), a nineteen page document which can be purchased from the AIAA.  In it they make the following definitions:

Verification:

“The process of determining that a model implementation accurately represents the developer’s conceptual description of the model and the solution to the model.”

Validation:

“The process of determining the degree to which a model is an accurate representation of the real world from the perspective of the intended uses of the model.”

ERCOFTAC

The European Research Community on Flow, Turbulence and Combustion, Special Interest Group on “Quality and Trust in Industrial CFD” has published a general CFD Best Practice Guidelines.  It covers a wide range of considerations for single phase CFD.  However, emphasis is on creation of the input model.  Verification and Validation activities are not described in a rigorous way, but are briefly defined.

Verification:

“Procedure to ensure that the program solves the equations correctly.”

Validation:

“Procedure to test the extent to which the model accurately represents reality.”
