Lesson 5/6 involved working with a variety of CAD, GIS, and GPS data. It was necessary to import several of these file formats as they were not native to ArcGIS. Below (Figure 1) is a map created off of the lesson data. It should be noted that although the school district boundaries were delineated, the names associated with each polygon was unknown.

The primary source data for my project will an ArcIMS image containing the National Register layer on the www.mapwv.gov server (Map West Virginia 2007). This image files from this site (SHPOB layer) are projected in UTM NAD 1983 Zone 17. Because this data is provided as an ArcIMS image, it will be necessary to manually convert it into a shape file or GeoDatabase, as symbology of the image cannot be manipulated.
Numerous other data is available through the West Virginia GIS Technical Center (2007). Of primary interest, is the 1:4,800 color orthophotography created by the West Virginia Statewide Addressing and Mapping Board (SAMB 2007). This data is available in quarter quads, projected both in State Plane and UTM. Also available through the WV GIS Technical Center is a road DLG based on 1:24,000 DRG. This data is projected in UTM NAD 27. This data is available in both ESRI E00 and DLG formats. The equivalent data is also available from the USGS seamless.usgs.gov site as a shape file.
Although, I may plan on providing multiple other layers, I do not anticipate any compatibility issues. One potential problem may result from the difference in scale between the roads layer and ArcIMS image, and the color orthophotos. This may result in alignment errors when zoomed in more than 1:24000. If this appears to be a significant challenge, I may choose to solely use the shape file I create (which will be based on the ArcIMS image) overlaid on the orthophoto.
