Lesson 5: Representing Volumes and Surfaces (week 2)

Jim Kompanek

Oregon Maps (from Part II)

Figures 1 and 2 (below) are shaded relief maps of Oregon with contour lines. It was difficult to determine an acceptable contour interval (for such a scale), as none of the results were appealing. A contour interval of 100 m was too cluttered and an interval of 1000 m was too general. A 500 m interval was chosen as it showed elevation changes without cluttering the map. The hillshade specifications are indicated below.

Figure 1                                        Figure 2

Azimuth: 300                                Azimuth: 0

Altitude: 50                                   Altitude: 25

Z Factor: 5                                    Z Factor: 3

Oregon Maps (from Part III)

Figures 3 and 4 contain interpolated precipitation data, as well as control point locations for Oregon. Both maps were generated using IDW and use precipitation contours at 1 inch intervals. Bold contour lines were symbolized at 5 inch intervals. Figures 3 and 4 were generated with the same specifications, the only difference between the two is hillshade is included in Figure 3. The specifications used for the figures are indicated below

Figure 3 and 4 Specifications

Interpolation Method: IDW

Search Radius Type: Variable

Number of Points: 12

Output Cell: 1823.75 (default)

Symbolization Method: Stretched

Hillshade Azimuth: 300 (Figure 3 only)

Hillshade Altitude: 50 (Figure 3 only)

Z Factor: 5 (Figure 3 only)

Transparency: 35 percent (Figure 3 only)
