There was a time in the United States of America when it was understood that government behaved improperly when it took from one person to give to another. This month's selection from The Law calls our attention to the ease with which one can identify the improper role of government. Sad to say, most of what the United States Government and 50 state governments do today can be accurately described as legal plunder. Will there be a "new birth of freedom" that Lincoln called for in 1863 built on respect for private property? It does seem a long way off, but the prescription is elegantly presented by Bastiat.
