Paul David Hewson, one of the most famous philanthropists in the world. He was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. He has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times, has met top political leaders all over the world, and co-founded the ONE Campaign. He has also had a very notable music career. He has also won 22 Grammys, is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and is a member of a band having sold over 150 million records worldwide. I am sure by now you are wondering how this Paul Hewson person can be so famous and successful and you have never heard of them. Well he more commonly goes by Bono, the front man of the very successful and popular band U2.
When prompted with the idea of researching someone that interests me that I share a similar culture with I did not know where I wanted to begin. Knowing that I have an 100% Irish heritage I decided to google famous individuals from Ireland. Then I remembered the most famous Irish person I know of Bono. I am not a huge Bono music fan, I do not even own one U2 song on my iPod. However over the years I have read about his activism and philanthropic work. I read a book called "Fugitive Denim", it started with a story of Bono and his wife Ali Hewson starting Edun, a fashion line with factories in Africa in efforts to help make a sustainable economy. I later took a luxury marketing class in Paris where we discussed in great length Bono?s charitable work and then his partnership with Louis Vuitton. I have also seen his (RED) products in stores for years and know that he is connected to that organization. He is someone of interest to me because he fights for what he believes in, and finds the time to be a constant crusader for others while writing songs, selling millions of records and playing on concert tours. Giving back and helping others is a hobby of mines as well. I am a member of a service organization here on campus. I think Bono's life story is an inspirational one for everyone. It doesn't matter if you are interested in music, volunteering, or something else. His story is one of hard work, doing what you love, and achieving triumphant outcomes.
Bono's music career as the front man of U2 has been a long time success. He joined the band back as a teenager in high school. Although the band did not the world wide power house they are today until the release of their album "The Joshua Tree". To date the band has had 12 concert tours starting in 1980. The success of the band is in great part to Bono. He is the lead singer and front man of the group as well as the writer of almost every song.
His musical career has been very successful but his philanthropic is equally if not more impressive. Bono has become a figure head for both AIDS and world poverty. It is said that his interest in charity work was sparked by the LiveAide performance in Ethiopia in 1985. Since then he has made it part of his life mission to help others. He strives to use his fame and celebrity for good. He works hard at getting political leaders around the world in on helping solve global problems like AIDS or poverty. He has launched many relief effort organizations. He founded DATA, which stands for: debt, AIDS, trade, Africa. This later became ONE, which is the parent organization to (RED). (RED) started as a way to get corporations and consumers in on helping give back to AIDS prevention in Africa. Corporations produce (RED) products and parts of the proceeds are donated to relief in Africa. Bono has also started Edun with his wife. In efforts to not just supply those in need in Africa with temporary relief the duo started the fashion company with factories in Africa, giving them the ability to trade with other countries. Creating a sustainable economy in Africa has become one of Bono's missions. Bono shows no sign in slowing down in his efforts to make the world a better place anytime soon. His relief work in Africa has been nominated for the Nobel Piece Price three different times. Bono has often been said to be one of the most influential people in the world. His work in both music and charitable works are remarkable.
