Façade of my electronic side. Don't expect updates or else they will surely come.
-- Jeff D'Angelo, quoting himself

If you give someone a program, you will frustrate them for a day; if you teach them how to program, you will frustrate them for a lifetime.
-- Author unknownThe difference between art and science is that science is what we understand well enough to explain to a computer. Art is everything else.
-- Donald Knuth, "Discover"First we thought the PC was a calculator. Then we found out how to turn numbers into letters with ASCII-- then we thought it was a typewritter. Then we discovered graphics, and we thought it was a television. With the World Wide Web, we've realized it's a brochure.
-- Douglas AdamsI love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.
-- Douglas AdamsWe've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true.
-- Robert WilenskyOne World, one Web, one Program
Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Fuhrer

-- Adolf Hitler (compare to last quote)Any sufficiently advanced technology is indestiguishable from a rigged demo.
-- Andy Finkel, computer guyOld programmers never die, they just branch to another address.
-- Unix fortuneCampus sidewalks never exist as the straightest line between two points.
-- M. M. JohnstonThose who do not understand Unix are condemned to reinvent it, poorly.
-- Henry SpencerCommand, n.: Statement presented by a human and accepted by a computer in such a manner as to make the human feel as if he is in control.
-- UnknownFew things are worth repeating that aren't in quotation marks.
-- Jeff D'AngeloThe reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.
-- George Bernard ShawThe majority of the stupid is invincible and guaranteed for all time. The terror of their tyranny, however, is alleviated by their lack of consistency.
-- Albert EinsteinNever underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
-- My old bumper stickerYou should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.
-- SnatchA classic is something that everyone wants to have read and nobody wants to read.
-- Mark Twain, "The Disappearance of Literature"Adding features does not necessarily increase functionality -- it just makes the manuals thicker.
-- unknownOnce harm has been done, even a fool understands it.
-- HomerIf you want to travel around the world and be invited to speak at a lot of different places, just write a Unix operating system.
-- Linus TorvaldsIt's not that I'm easily distractible, it is that I feel highly unsatisfied choosing one specific activity above all others from any given moment to the next.
-- Jeff D'Angelo, 2005-01-14, on his personal undefinition of ADHDHe who does not study rhetoric will be a victim of it
-- found on a Greek wall from the 6th Century B.C.The most important service rendered by the press is that of educating people to approach printed matter with distrust.
-- Samuel ButlerCommon sense is nothing more than a deposit of prejudices laid down by the mind before you reach eighteen.
-- Albert EinsteinAll truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.
-- Arthur SchopenhauerFirst they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.
-- Mahatma GandhiThe universe is made of stories, not of atoms.
-- Muriel Rukeyser (from her poem, The Speed of Darkness)Never trust atoms, they make up everything.
-- some button asking to be bought, made up by atoms.Besides the obscurity arising from the complexity of objects, and the imperfection of the human faculties, the medium through which the conceptions of men are conveyed to each other adds a fresh embarrassment.
-- James Madison from the Federalist PapersNot that the story need be long, but it will take a long while to make it short.
-- Henry David Thoreau (mentioned on quoteinvestigator.com)Inverse law of succinctity: It often takes more time than you save to convey any message correctly in less time.
-- Jeff D'Angelo, in response to his lack of search-fu to find a better quote than the above on this principal.Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction.
-- Albert EinsteinEverything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.
-- Albert Einstein, supposedlyorganizations which design systems ... are constrained to produce designs which are copies of the communication structures of these organizations
-- M. Conway (a.k.a. Conway's Law)Blindly following a list of best practices is not a best practice.
-- Jeff D'AngeloWEBSITES THAT COLLECT QUOTES ARE FULL OF MISTAKES AND NEVER CHECK ORIGINAL SOURCES.
-- Randall Munroe, xkcd 1942Fools ignore complexity; pragmatists suffer it; experts avoid it; geniuses remove it.

Professional:
As you may question why I have had an account at the Mathematics Department (not my department of study) of Penn State University, it was because I was a part time systems administrator for them from Aug 1998 thru 2002. After graduation I worked full time in the Systems Group at ZedX, Inc..
Now I work as a Systems Analyst in the Enabling Technologies Group, of the Advanced Information Technology (AIT) side of Academic Services and Emerging Technologies (ASET), a unit of Penn State's main computer department, Information Technology Services (ITS). Confused? Well the Enabling Technology Group used to be called UNIX Systems and Technical Solutions Group, ASET used to be called the Center for Academic Computing (CAC) and ITS used to be called Computer and Information Systems (C&IS). Still confused? Well I do have a mini org chart. Ok, I have a computer job with the University; just leave it at that.
I am a recent graduate of the Computer Engineering major (Bachelor of Science); part of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department, and the College of Engineering.
I was the Coordinator of the Student Activity Server Committee. We made www.clubs.psu.edu happen.
A lot of the responsibility of managing this (technical administration) has followed me (or was that preceded me) to ASET. Just what exactly this means? Well keep watching the Server homepage for announced changes (like how that page is now ran by Student Affairs - ITS (me) does clubs.psu.edu/info). It won't be long now before we make things work a little smoother...well that is always my hope. Maybe this time stuff will really happen cuz I will be able to do stuff behind the scenes. Wish me luck.
I have prepared an online resume at www.personal.psu.edu/jcd144/resume
I have constructed a mail filter to block the pesky Sircam worm for users of MathNet. I call it by the cutesy name, "desircamify". Sooner or later I'll get around to throwing this out and replacing it with a general purpose malware filter. Hmm...maybe a SPAM filter too. Maybe even for the whole University?...we can only hope...
Personal:
I am a Pennsylvanian, native for +two decades. I was born in the People's Republic of New Jersey.
Want to find me? Do you have an URGENT HITEC BUSINESS TRANSACTION/DEAL proposal? Email works best for new Internet acquaintances, and it is easiest for me to ignore the annoying. I also use a few of the popular chat services and may give out my handle if you seem nice.
Geek stuff:
This whole page reeks of geek, so this section must be truly inane.
Fun stuff?:
No I am not very fun, at least on the web right now. Maybe I will add more later.
Linux propaganda:
Linux on Nintendo 64 - http://www.ix.de/ix/artikel/E/1997/04/036
Provocative:
Very interesting paper by Rob Pike of Bell Labs about stagnation in the orthodoxy of ideas in the computer industry (strikes a chord with me) - Feel free to read it from me here.
Misc (or plain silly):
Mail me suggestions (dangelo@math.psu.edu)
"What the..." - top Web sites that will mess with your head
Mandatory PGP blurb (that you will ignore anyway):
