Patterns

Recognition of patterns within apparent chaos is a fundamental human characteristic.  The development of this ability was critical to human survival:  being able to see camouflaged predators or prey, being able to distinguish edible from poisonous plants, track prey.

Does the open-ended nature of artworks somehow fulfill this void?  A similarity to the experience of tracking elusive prey?

Is a dynamic and successful composition of painting or photograph more similar to naturally occurring situations (asymmetry, multiple elements, movement throughout) than less successful, static compositions (central, symmetrical, repetitive)?
