So the Tom Hanks vehicle, Cast Away, was on numerous times this weekend. One of the repeating scenes in the movie is a figure eight like drawing marking the path of the Sun as shines through a hole in the cave during the course of the year. You may have noticed this on the globe which you had in your classroom as a kid. What it represents is the angular offset of the Sun from its mean position on the celestial sphere as viewed from the Earth. This figure eight type path is known as an analemma and traces what is known as "the equation of time" for a given celestial body (in this case the Sun). The Wikipedia entry for analemma is very detailed so I'll point the reader there, now that you know what it's called.
What's that called again?
