Hybrid Vehicles

What are hybrid vehicles?

A hybrid vehicle is any vehicle that has two power sources. One of the sources convert fuel into usable energy and the other lowers the demand placed on the first power source. A hybrid vehicle uses a rechargeable energy source and a fuelled power source for vehicle propulsion. Hybrid vehicles have a small fuel efficient gas engine along with an electric motor. The electric motor assists the engine in acceleration.

How does a hybrid vehicle work?

A hybrid vehicle works by the way the vehicle is configured. There are two basic hybrid vehicle configurations

1.      Series Hybrid Configuration

2.      Parallel Hybrid Configuration

In a series hybrid configuration, the combustion engine drives a generator that feeds the electric motor or the battery  The gasoline engine turns a generator which can then charge up the batteries or power the electric motor to turn the transmission.

In a parallel hybrid configuration, the engine and the electric motor are linked together. A parallel engine has a fuel tank and a set of batteries. They are both linked to the transmission. The fuel tank feeds gasoline to the engine and the batteries supplies power to the electric motor. Either of them or both of them at the same time can provide power. The electric motor and engine turn the transmission which moves the wheels.

What do the typical structures of a hybrid vehicle include?

A typical hybrid vehicle includes a gasoline engine, an electric motor, a generator, batteries, and a transmission.

A gasoline engine is like the engines in most vehicles. The only difference is that the engine is smaller in hybrid vehicles. The engine in hybrid vehicles takes advantages of technology to reduce emissions and increase efficiency.

An electric motor in a hybrid vehicle is very sophisticated. Advances in electronics allow it to be used as a motor and generator. When needed, the electric motor is able to get energy to accelerate the car. The electric motor can also decelerate cars to return energy to the batteries.

The generator is somewhat like the electric motor. The only purpose of the electric motor is to produce electrical power.

Batteries are in hybrid vehicles because they are the energy source for the electric motor. The energy can also be put back into the battery by the electric motor.

The transmission in hybrid vehicles are used for the same purposes as the transmission in regular vehicles

How does the battery life in the hybrid engine last so long and how do they recharge?

Hybrids can increase the charge on their batteries by using the kinetic energy that is captured during regenerative braking. When driving, generation of electricity is capable by spinning an electrical generator that either recharges the battery or uses the power generated directly.

 Hybrid cars

The Toyota Prius

The first mass produced hybrid car is the Toyota Prius. It is currently being sold in Japan, the United States and Europe. The Prius almost doubles the fuel efficiency of cars powered solely by gasoline.

The Ford Escape Hybrid

The Ford Escape Hybrid is the first vehicle to combine SUV capability with great fuel economy, lowering the environmental impact. This SUV is a “full hybrid,” meaning it has the capability of automatically switching between pure electric power, pure gasoline, or diesel engine. It is also able to combine the operation to maximize efficiency and performance.

The Ford Escape Hybrid can improve fuel economy by 50 percent during stop and go driving types. When driving in a city, the fuel economy is improved by 75 percent. It allows you to drive for over 400 miles a one tank of gas.

Hybrid Trucks

General Motors introduced hybrid trucks in 2005 when they released hybrid versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. Both of these trucks have better fuel economy than non-hybrid trucks. The hybrid engine is a soft hybrid, meaning the electric power boosts up the acceleration. Also, General Motor vehicles have the ability to turn off its engine at traffic lights. According to representatives of the company, the trucks can operate for 32 hours straight without the need to refill the gas tank.

Hybrid Buses

Hybrid buses are still in the developmental stages. There are a few prototypes in the United States in use. Some bus transits are experimenting with the hybrid technology. The states using hybrid buses are New York, California, and Iowa. The use of hybrid buses as a commercial product faces obstacles impeding the wider use of hybrid technology.

Hybrid bus technology is similar to the hybrid technology in cars and trucks. The main difference between hybrid buses and other hybrid vehicles are the coupling diesel fueled engines with electric motors instead of the typical gasoline electric motors.

Hybrid buses are manufactured by three major companies; General Motors, British Aerospace Engineering systems, and ISE corporation.

What are the configurations of a hybrid bus engine?

The hybrid engines always consist of three parts:

            1. An energy storage system

            2. A power unit

            3. A vehicle propulsion system

There are many configuration types of a hybrid engine, but the most common configuration type configuration type is the combination of the internal combustion engine with a battery and electric motor.
