Biographical Sketch

I am a 3rd year Ph.D. student in the interdisciplinary track in Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science in the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) at Penn State University. I am working with Dr. John Yen (advisor) and Dr. Jim Jansen (co-advisor) in the Laboratory for Intelligent Agents. I received my M.S. in IST with a graduate minor in computational science from Penn State University in 2010. My master's thesis Data Mining on Microblogged Information: Gender Recognition and Suicide Prevention explores machine learning algorithms with an emphasis on feature selection and dimension reduction processes, and proposes a suitable way of classifying texts from social media for gender recognition by finding gender-preferential attributes in expressing sentiments. My thesis also addresses the connection between the two serious social problems, adolescent sucide and cyberbullying, and stresses the potential use of the machine learning techniques to detect suicidal thoughts in order to prevent suicide. I earned my B.S. in computer science and industrial system engineering from Yonsei University (Seoul, South Korea) in 2008. Prior to this, I was an exchange student at Korea University (Seoul, South Korea) for a semester getting expertise in interpersonal psychology.
