Fall 2011, 2 sections Message Analysis/Criticism and 1 section Basic Public Speaking
I am teaching two sections of a course in message criticism and analysis, CAS 100C in the Department of Communication Arts & Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University. A sample syllabus is available here. Student work from previous sections of this class is featured here.
CAS 100C emphasizes the analysis and evaluation of communicative messages, with some attention devoted to group communication and to the use of oral communication skills in the public-speaking setting. This course seeks to deepen students’ understanding of the social uses of rhetoric and to extend mastery of its essential principles and precepts. Beyond this, the course seeks to assist students in developing communication skills that will have application in both civic and professional settings.
In addition, I am teaching one section of basic public speaking, CAS 100A in the Department of Communication Arts & Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University. A sample syllabus is available here.
This basic course primarily features public speaking and basic writing skills. The course involves three major speaking assignments and takes a civic engagement focus. Students explore significant social problems, propose solutions to those problems, motivate one another to take action, and learn basic group and analytical skills.
