Scottish Cardinal Fights Homosexuality in the Schools

CARDINAL SPARKS OUTRAGE AFTER CALLING HOMOSEXUALITY
"A PERVERSION"

GLASGOW (CWNews.com) - Scotland's Cardinal Thomas Winning came under fire yesterday after he branded homosexuality a "perversion."

Speaking in support of businessman Brian Souter who has offered millions of British pounds to help fight the repeal of Clause 28 -- the so-called anti-homosexual law -- the cardinal said: "I deplore homosexual acts."

"I hesitate to use the word perversion but let's face up to the truth," he said. "What pains me is that the silent majority are so silent that the silence is deafening. I wish to God they would speak up. But when you do say something about it, you are accused of homophobia which is absolute rubbish."

He added, "I have no objection to anybody. I'm supposed to love my neighbor and I try to do that as much as I can. But I will not stand for this kind of behavior which is now being regarded as wholesome and healthy."

He continued: "Homosexuality is promoted every day. It's promoted by people who are on the streets, it's promoted by people who are attracted to others. We only need to look at some of the pamphlets available to see just exactly what is in place to put into schools. I am concerned that children might be converted by some of the literature. There's no doubt about it."

Several British trade unions have advised members to boycott Stagecoach buses, the company owned by Souter and to avoid using Virgin trains and planes in which Souter is a major shareholder.

But Cardinal Winning said such action was "unacceptable" and added: "I deplore the witch-hunt they have started against him."

Peter Tatchell, leader of gay rights group OutRage!, accused Cardinal Winning of championing discrimination. "He is acting like the leaders of the Afrikaner Church in South Africa during the apartheid regime," he told today's Times newspaper. "They advocated discrimination against black people. He is supporting discrimination against gay and lesbian people. The cardinal is storing up prejudice and intolerance. His scaremongering is provoking false fears and worries."

THE "outrage" is the promotion of "sexual perversion" as an alternative lifestyle. God bless this Cardinal for speaking out. Where are the rest?

SCOTTISH CARDINAL CALLS FOR CLAUSE 28 SUPPORT IN ENGLAND

GLASGOW (CWNews.com) - Cardinal Thomas Winning has called on English Christians to join his crusade against the repeal of Section 28 of the Local Government Act which would allow school children to be taught about homosexuality in the classroom.

Writing in today's Daily Telegraph, he said he was "genuinely horrified" by health promotion leaflets which lead children into role-playing homosexual scenarios. "It is a pity that, in today's society, anyone who raises concerns about this issue is regarded as homophobic," said the cardinal. "To accuse Christians of homophobia is to insult and demean us. However, homosexual acts are inherently wrong and the homosexual way of life should not be presented as the moral equivalent of marriage and family life."

Cardinal Winning was promoting the Scottish Churches campaign against repeal of Section 28 and asked why there was such a "strange silence" on the subject in England and Wales. "I cannot believe that Christians south of the border are any less concerned than those living north of Gretna," he said.

Cardinal Winning continued: "I have already made it clear that the Catholic Church, for its part, will allow no material promoting homosexual acts to be admitted into the classrooms of Catholic schools in Scotland. And lest it be argued that such a position condemns confused teenagers to a life of misery, remember that Section 28 does not prevent the discussion of homosexuality, nor the counseling of teenagers confused about their sexuality. What Section 28 does is to prevent the promotion of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship."

He added, "That is why it is so important for all who are worried about the danger of homosexual proselytism to speak up -- and to speak up quickly. To do nothing is silently to consent. In the face of an increasingly militant and vocal 'gay rights' campaign. The United Kingdom needs the protection offered by Section 28."

The Rt. Rev John Cairns, head of the Church of Scotland, yesterday said Cardinal Winning was being "governed by his own feelings" and accused him of leading "an unbalanced discussion."

Is the Church of Scotland Christian? Judging by the comments of the Rt. Rev John Cairns, I don't believe so. How can he make such a statement? He and all the Churches of the world should be in solidarity with the Cardinal Archbishop of Glasgow.

COALITION OF CHRISTIANS CALL FOR MORE SEXUAL FREEDOM

NEW YORK (CWNews.com) - A coalition of 850 mostly liberal clergy and other religious leaders issued a statement on Tuesday calling for all religions to allow same-sex marriages, homosexual clergy, open access to abortion and contraception, and sex education at all ages.

The statement was signed by the retired leader of the Episcopal Church, the presidents of the United Church of Christ and Unitarian Universalist Association, presidents or deans at 15 Protestant seminaries, and numerous theology teachers, but not by any Catholic, Evangelical, black Protestant, Eastern Orthodox, Mormon, Buddhist, Hindu, or Muslim leaders.

"For too long the only voices in the public square on religion and sexuality have been the anti-sexuality pronouncements of the religious right," said Debra Haffner, president of the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the US, a secular organization.

While members of 25 different denominations signed the declaration, about half were from the United Church, the Unitarian Universalist Association, Reform Judaism, and Reconstructionist Judaism, among the most liberal religious groups. It was also signed by two Catholic nuns and a few Catholic laypersons.
