Badges for Merit

A colleague mentioned today that Mozilla had just announced an Open Badges Project whereby people could earn 'badges' for significant efforts in various areas of performance or learning.  I thought right away of Student Affairs using this as a strategy to find a way to package and 'certify' that a student had completed a significant experience in some cocurricular outcome area.

Could something like this get more students involved than are involved already?  Or, would it provide another level of motivation for those that are already involved?
