Who is Michael Pillsbury?
When I first heard of Michael
Pillsbury, I really was unsure as to who
he was. All I knew for sure was that Mike Pillsbury
was a name that was
associated with China. Someone said that there was an incredible book
called "China Debates the Future Security
Environment" that I must
read. I really didn't at first know if I wanted to read the book or not
because I really didn't know anything about this man, so I did what
anyone would have done, I began to look up information about who
Michael Pillsbury
is on Wikipedia
and I found out that he is best known
for his work in the Reagan administration where he functioned as
Assistant Under the Secretary of Defense. Apparently he was responsible
for a program known as the Reagan Doctrine.
In 1975 & 1976 Dr. Pillsbury was employed at the RAND Corporation and published several articles suggesting that the U.S. re-establish ties through military and intelligence with China. This initiative was supported by President Reagan and Henry Kissinger and went on to become US policy during the time when President Reagan and President Carter were in office.
By helping to increase the communications between the US and China, the US was able to gain more military knowledge in regard to China's military powers and intelligence abilities. Prior to these suggestions by Michael Pillsbury the United States remained relatively in the dark as to the military resources that China possessed. Gaps in knowledge create a detrimental situation when it comes to being able to protect ourselves against the military forces of other nations, and this is why Michael Pillsbury's contributions to this effort have been so important not only the Reagan administration but to the national security of the entire United States.
I also learned that there were two other books that cover his contributions to the US military and they are Clinton's Deputy Attorney General's book in 2008 "Living the Policy Process" and James Mann's "About Face" and in addition to that he also wrote another book called "Chinese Views of Future Warfare".
It is amazing how just one individual can change the course of history, and it is amazing that this man has done so much for the US and keeping us secure and yet I am just learning about who he is and what he has done. I am very much looking forward to reading his books and learning more about his contributions to our world.
