six sigma

It's sort of funny the way we gain some real experience when we
actually think that we're going to do something completely mundane.
This summer I got awarded a work study since I am taking a couple of
classes. I didn't really want to go home and sit on my parents' couch
all summer so I thought that I would do something at least a little
productive with my time. I found the listing on a flyer and called the
lady. After a quick phone interview I was basically hired. She told me
that I would be doing general office work and that it was within the
office of the business department. Me being a liberal arts major I had
no idea what to think except the couple of scene of me making coffee
and copying things for hours on end.

When I started the job five weeks ago I was as nervous as any person is
on their first day at anything new. Of course at first my stereotypical
dreams were quickly fulfilled as I was asked to make coffee every
morning and basically fill out any forms that they did not want to,
about a million times. At the end of the week the boos asked me what I
thought of the job and I gave her a quick little nod of approval and
she asked if I thought I might like to stay on for the fall as well. I
had not even thought about that so I said I might like that. Then she
told me that they were offering a program to all of their interns a
change to get a six
sigma certification which is basically a title of efficiency expert. I was
stunned since I had never done anything business related and didn't
think I could ever fit in to a place like this. I didn't say that to
her face of course but I was excited about the opportunity.

It's been about a week since I met with my six sigma representative and
we are planning on doing the training as a group of interns in mid
July. I still don't quite understand what the whole system actually
means and so I am still sort of in the dark. At the same time though, I
don't know if I have ever been as optimistic about my future as I am
right now.
