rehab

My husband has been in drug rehab
when he was younger.  He
really feels like the counseling in this
place really helped him to get his act together.
I myself have never been to drug rehab,
however, I do think that it can be a beneficial process for those
willing to
get help.  You
probably don’t think that
people can change, but I have seen it with my own eyes and I do believe
that
people can heal and change, it just depends mostly on their desire to
do so.

His alcohol and drug abuse began at an early age, he was 13.  First he began drinking alcohol and smoking pot.  His parents basically were ignoring these things, and then when he got a little older he began smoking crack.  It was a pretty sad situation.  Fortunately, he was not one of those people who used it all the time, basically he would binge.  He would go out for 2 or 3 days and then return.  He would spend those few days smoking crack with total strangers, getting high.  Then he would return home and sober up.  This he would do every month or two.

When I met him, he was not out of the woods yet, only I did not know it.  We were working at the same place, and met, I had a daughter and he had a daughter on the way.  We began seeing each other, and then one day he disappeared.  His parents showed up at my work place, asking me if I had heard from John and said that he stole their car and had disappeared.  Being as naïve as I was, I still did not really understand what was wrong with him.  Upon his return, he told me about his problems and that he really needed to enter drug rehab again for some help.  Well, he did and he came out a new man.

We moved away together so I could return to school.  This was a big help to get him away from his family situation.  Don’t get me wrong, he did have 2 or 3 relapses along the way, and that really scared me.  Now he has been clean and sober for almost 10 years, it will be 10 years next month, and I am really proud of him and all he has accomplished.  He likes to credit me with his success, but I assure him that it was all him.  Truly no one can help you if you don’t want to be helped.
