"Mobile Services: Tech Tools For Tough Times"
PSU Libraries are focusing on new technologies for innovative ways to connect with and provide new services to their users, experimenting with the use of iPod Touches and Skype to offer point-of-service reference as well as voice, SMS, and IM connection with its main reference desk and other roving reference staff members. They have partnered with Sony to test the Sony Reader in the library environment, and are using the reader as a teaching tool, offering preloaded course titles and course reserves and as a device for leisure reading, offering multiple titles with a single checkout, and investigating the possibilities of downloading on-demand materials to the reader for a more user-centered experience.

"Doubling Discoverability with Toolbars and Widgets"
In an effort to increase the discoverability of its resources, Penn State University Libraries have create a handful of web tools that allow users to search the catalog and other resources in a variety of ways. The development of a LibX toolbar, a customizable plugin for Firefox, provides direct access to the library's resources including the catalog. The LibX open source framework easily allows libraries to build an edition that is specific to their library and provide features like OpenURL support, integration with Google Scholar, and catalog searching directly from a browser. Library widgets (small, portable versions of online tools, such as the library catalog) allow users to 'own' and individually place resources where they are most relevant to their needs. Penn State has built an undergraduate-focused interface comprised entirely of unique widgets for major search tools and library links. Users may search for library information and resources via the undergraduate interface, or take away selected widgets from this page for use in open platforms such as iGoogle.

Penn State University Teaching and Learning with Technology Symposium Poster Session
How is reading retention and comprehension affected by the hardware used to read texts? Last Fall, two English honor classes and one Library Studies course used the Sony Reader to read their assigned texts . What were the students reactions? How did their retention compare to a control group that read the texts in codex form? What other types of media did they load on their readers? And why did some students call it My Handy Dandy Reading Tool?
Join us for a discussion of some preliminary observations about the pilot study between Sony, the English Department, and the University Libraries.Poster Session

"Library Web Presence: Engaging the Audience"
From widgets to interactive subject guides, libraries are exploring ways to
improve library web services. Penn State staff show how library widgets
(small, portable versions of library tools) can remove barriers and enable
users to add widgets to Facebook, iGoogle, or any place they want them.
