Directors take turns asking people to read for different parts
Make sure everyone gets an opportunity to read for everything they'd like to try out for.
Try to keep an open mind. You may not be able to fulfil your preconceived ideas of character types.
Look for significant contrasts between characters that parallel your ideas.
