I must leave you for
now, though I am confident that I am really
not leaving you at all.
We are so together in spirit.
~Laurie, March 6, 1990
Recall that desolate January evening in Prague, when snowfall mixed with streetlamps to brush the city with gold. And remember how, after walking through its eerie beauty together and unpeeling our weighty winter clothes, we tied our arms around each other’s backs, sensed the rhythmic fluttering of two hearts in each chest, and then promised never to leave one another.
Though we both knew the pledge was absurd, we wanted so desperately to live for one moment in that impossible comfort, to just once gulp the soothing dream of forever…so we promised.
And strangely, as we dared to voice that impossible oath, a twin vision was born. In a startling instant of synchronicity, as we slowly untangled and backed away, each of us saw our own spirit alive in the spark of the other’s eyes. And through the unusual clarity of this moment, we recognized—with extraordinary comfort—that we would never truly part.
So we remind you now of that prophesy when
you most need its assurance. May you recall that our love still lights
even your flickering glow…now that we live through one heartbeat.
