Hi! I'm Sandra Savignon, Professor Emerita of French and English as an International Language, University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Professor Emerita of Applied
Linguistics, Penn State University. My research has focused on issues related
to second language acquisition, language testing, communicative language
teaching and curriculum design. I have taught courses in second language
acquisition, communicative language teaching (CLT), language and gender and World Englishes, drawing students
from the College of Education and departments of Linguistics, French, German, and Spanish in the
College of Liberal Arts. During my tenure at the University
of Illinois I founded and directed the multidisciplinary doctoral
program in Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education (SLATE).
My books include Communicative
Competence: An Experiment in Foreign-Language Teaching (Center for Curriculum
Development 1972), and Communicative
Competence: Theory and Classroom Practice (Addison
Wesley 1983), winner of the Modern Language Association of America
Mildenberger Medal for an outstanding research publication in the field
of second/foreign language teaching. A second edition was published
by McGraw Hill (1997) with a Japanese translation appearing in
2009. Interpreting
Communicative Language Teaching: Contexts and Concerns in Teacher Education (Yale University Press 2002) is an edited volume that looks at CLT and teacher education from an international
perspective. The contributors include distinguished researchers from the
US, Asia, and Europe.
I am a past president of the American
Association for Applied Linguistics and
served as convenor of the Scientific Commission for Language Teaching
Methodology and Teacher Education for the International Association of
Applied Linguistics (AILA)
from 1996-2005.
Throughout my professional career I have had the privilege of giving
seminars and consulting on CLT in Asia, Europe, North and South America. I am proud
to count among my former students classroom teachers, program administrators,
materials developers and university faculty working to promote understanding
of CLT in language programs around the world. My
husband Gabriel and I are now happily settled in Albuquerque, New
Mexico where we enjoy year 'round sunny skies, a vibrant cultural mix,
amazing vistas and the frequent company of our three children and eight
grandchildren.
