COURSE GOALS

The primary goal for this course is to make students better prepared for meeting the expectations of the internship.  To do so we will work with exercises designed to:

Enhance informal speaking skills
Develop presentation skills
Encourage independent learning
Enhance person to person networking skills
Develop a professional resume
Develop office communications skills

In addition students will participate in activities which are designed to help them think about themselves and the specific healthcare environments which might be the best match to their work and personal needs.

How to do Well in HPA390

This course is designed in such as way that every student can do well if they want to.  There are many opportunity to earn points so that each student has the opportunity to demonstrate his or her strengths. Some assignments are peer reviewed before they are turned in.  The TA for the course is very willing to look over materials before they are turned in for a grade.   There are even points given for attending a dinner.

The most important activities a student can do to succeed are:
1.
First, come to class. You've paid for it. Get your money's worth. Furthermore, we'll often cover material in class that isn't in the materials. And of course, class participation is a key part of your becoming a good consumer in your studies.
2.  Use examples provided on this web site and in your text for assistance with your written assignments
4.  Follow instructions
5.  Make an appointment to visit the instructor and spend some time letting her get to know you
6.  Actively participate in class and get to know other class members

How much time will this take? I expect you to spend roughly nine hours each week out of class working on the material for this class. Students would spend this time (1) doing written assignments (2) reviewing reading and notes from the preceding week; (3) reading the material for the upcoming class; (4) preparing for the quizzes; and using Career Services events to help themselves find an internship and prepare themselves for entering a Healthcare Career

I also think it's worth reviewing student responsibilities as described in the University's commitment to a Vibrant Learning Culture.
Pay particular attention to the section on the "Student in the Learning Process".
