Demonstration of output from TEI encoding of Mary Moody Emerson Almanack

The demonstration is available in several “views”. The primary view is available here. Note that in order to view this properly, your browser must be capable of rendering XML with CSS.

Note: This demonstration provides an example of our work in progress on The Almanacks of Mary Moody Emerson: A Scholarly, Digital Edition. This 12-page excerpt is from an Almanack folder Emerson kept from approximately April through September 1827, and is based on the editors’ electronic transcriptions of the holograph manuscript.

The demonstration shows several features of the manuscript that have been encoded. These can be recognized as follows:

• deletions are indicated with a strike-through
• text that Emerson added later are shown in green
• editorial notes are boxed; in the note numbering system, “an” is for “annotation” and “tn” is for “textual note”
• page breaks are displayed as a line of hyphens with the page number
• the dateline at the begining of a new entry is displayed in bold
• passages that were underlined are displayed with one underscore

Original lineation and hyphenation has been retained, except when interupted by an annotation or textual note.

However, there are several limitations to this particular display, and several items are still in progress in this example of our XML encoding process, and have not yet been encoded in this demonstration:

• textual notes do not yet accompany Emerson’s on-line additions to her text
• writing that is upside down from the other pages in this folder not indicated
• text Emerson cited from other sources is not consistently enclosed in quotation marks
• some emendations and textual notes are not yet displayed
