Who We Are


The Coal Utilization Center is a unit of the EMS Energy Institute in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, along with the Carbon Research Center, Center for Environmental Chemistry, Laboratory for Hydrocarbon Processing Chemistry, and The Combustion Laboratory. The CUC faculty and staff have a variety of work and academic expertise. Their experience ranges from hands-on research and development to integrating fundamental research for problem solving to working side-by-side with graudate students. The CUC conducts research and development in the following areas: fuel development, characterization and handleability; combustion systems development; fossil and alternative fuel combustion; emissions characterization and reduction; utilization and disposal of combustion by-products; and technology transfer.
