AVISTA Publications Submissions

The AVISTA Series from Ashgate Publishing follows the Speculum style guide.

Material for the AVISTA Forum Journal should be in the hands of the appropriate editor in the early spring of each year and final corrections must be in the hands of the Editor in Chief by early July.

Presenters at Kalamazoo and Leeds should have their AFJ presentation submissions completed to hand to the AVISTA representative at their respective meetings.

Notes for Contributors

Style: The AVISTA Forum Journal follows the Chicago Manual of Style.
Citations in text should follow the author/date system: for example:

(Adams 1970), (Adams 1979, 1), (Adams 1980, 3-15).

The list of references at the end of the article is in alphabetical order and follows the format outlined in Chicago, for example:

  • For books: Anderson, E.G. 1978. The Division of Labor in Society. New York: John Wiley and Sons.
  • For articles: Bateson, W. and E.G. Tatum. 1992. On Morality and Society. Philosophy 35:23-48.
  • Please consult OSU's Chicago (scientific style) [PDF] for further details.

Use of extensive footnotes is discouraged.

Format for Submissions: With all submissions, provide the author’s name, affiliation or city of residence, and contact information on the title page.

If submitting an article by e-mail as an attachment, send illustrations in files separate from the text. JPG and TIF files are preferred for illustrations, Word or WordPerfect for text. If submitting by regular mail, send a copy of the text printed on standard size paper together with a floppy with the text in Word or WordPerfect for PC. DO NOT format the text in any way other than standard punctuation, paragraphing, and typography; i.e., do not attempt to lay out your article or apply formatting features to it, such as embedded styles. Contact the editor with any questions.

Illustrations: Authors are responsible for securing permission to reproduce illustrations and for any fees associated with their publication. Provide captions for all illustrations as a list of captions at the end of the paper. DO NOT embed illustrations in the text (see above note on format for submissions). Because of the variety of formats in which illustrations are available, the editor will work with authors to achieve the best resolution possible given the resources available in laying out and printing the journal.

AFJ will henceforth appear annually in November.
