It is also important to look at the many ways in which girls with CAH are not different from girls without CAH.
We showed in our last study that most girls with CAH have "typical" playmate preferences, that is, most girls said that they would rather play with girls than with boys (although many girls, both those with CAH and those without CAH , do play with boys, at least occasionally).
Most recently, we found that girls with CAH have "typical" female gender identity. We asked each girl her feelings about being a girl and her wish to be a boy.
Most girls with CAH clearly identify themselves as girls and have no wish to be boys.
Interestingly, girls with CAH may express less identification with females than do girls without CAH, perhaps because they have some "boy-typical" interests.
Other researchers have found that a very small minority of girls with CAH do wish to be boys, and it will be interesting to study further what factors cause some girls with CAH to proceed in a "typical" direction, and some to be different.
