Technical Writing for Webbed Spaces

English 202c - Spring 1998
Richard Doyle
mobius@psu.edu

This is a course designed to teach you how to compose and deliver persuasive discourse in end of the millenium technical ecologies. You will learn rhetorical tactics for writing convincing argumentative prose, develop analytical techniques for understanding the numerous genres of writing in the technical environment, and acquire research methods for making sense of the complex topics of technoscience. We will emphasize writing in a problem solving context, so you will spend the semester researching, analyzing and solving technical writing problems that you discover in the Penn State community or in virtual communities on the web.

In addition to class discussions and workshops, which will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, students will choose from a menu of CAC seminars and online tutorials that will help them gather the tools necessary for their final projects. Email composition, web design and electronic document flow analysis will be important components of the class, but we will also review principles of argumentation and style.
