Much recent work in the rhetoric of science has emphasized the importance of visualization technologies in technoscientific practice. Electron micrographs, cellular automata and MRI images have all been grist for new analyses of the day to day practice of technoscience ( "samsara science") as well as moments of extraordinary innovation or insight ( "sartori science"). At the same time, ecologies as diverse as contemporary theatre and public policy discussion have been increasingly oriented around technical images extracted from the context of their production. This course will map out a rhetoric of technical, medical and scientific images and the dynamics of their traffic among the domains of scientific inquiry, public policy, science fiction, installation art, and theatrical production.
