This course is a practicum in advanced argumentation. Beginning with the relatively simple forms of definitional argument, argument by analogy, and causal argument, the course will train students in the construction and deployment of rhetorical practices that respond to and transform the variable and volatile audiences of the contemporary public sphere. While the first half of the course will emphasize the formal attributes and capacities of rhetorical devices, the last segment of the course will inquire into the specific persuasive ecologies of two urgent but multi-sided topics. In addition to three short papers of 3-5 pages, students will draft, revise and publish a research essay of 12-15 pages. Two webzines, edited by students, will be produced by semester’s end.
