Laughter, Pathos and Limit Experience

English 597A
Richard Doyle
mobius@psu.edu

As if there were an opening, an opening like a gathering together, like a world, where something can happen, many things can happen, where there’s a whole lot, there’s a swarm of possibilities ….. Henri Michaux, With Mescaline

At its limits, language shatters and shreds, "failing" to respond to the force of experience. The result is usually pretty funny. This course will investigate, experiment, with and encounter this alleged failure in the work of community and aesthetics in the hopes of forging rhetorics reponsible to and productive of ecstasy , laughter and panic. Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Ethnographic. literary , philosophical and scientific texts will form the contours of our archive.
