Becoming Information:
Cyberculture for Fun and Profit Richard Doyle mobius@psu.edu Summer 2001 Click here for Bulletin Board We are among the first generations of human beings to be the objects of near continual and total surveillance by institutions of information. Universities, health care providers, governments, international corporations and non government organizations all compete in an environment where information collection and analysis are the primary means of producing value, wealth, health and human progress. This pride will teach students to think carefully about and respond interestingly to these large scale transformations of the economy and the Earth. We will look to a number of disciplines for help in this venture, but our readings will focus on recent literary and artistic works that have anticipated, driven and responded to the emergence of this new "matrix" or environment of information. Works by hackers, "cyberpunk" authors, artists and rogue scientists will provide us with our readings and viewings for the semester. No previous knowledge of computer technology , biotechnology or cyberculture is necessary.
