The main purpose of this website is to urgently appeal to all of the zoos and anyone now having blue duikers to cooperate in a serious effort to increase the numbers of blue duikers in the USA to a level that ensures a stable population that may meet the needs not only for zoo exhibition but for other purposes, including research, and enjoyment of their interesting and endearing qualities.
In 1979 there were 79 blue duikers alive in the United States. The official stud book numbers for 2001 are not out yet, however Dr. Cowan has kept close tabs on the blue duikers in the US and Dr. Cowan estimates the number of blue duikers alive in the United States as of the 2001 stud book to be under 50. Dr. Cowan would like to reverse this trend as soon as possible.
Dr. Cowan has procured two breeding sites in Florida that can increase the blue duiker population. If you have blue duikers (females and males needed) that may be used for the purpose of increasing the blue duiker population in the United States please contact Dr. Cowan.
