NOTES
ON HOMEWORK TO BE TURNED IN
-
Each page must have your name and the page number at the top.
-
All sheets must be stapled together before
turning them in.
-
All homework must be submitted on green Engineering Calculation paper.
-
All homework must include the following:
- Sketch of the system
- Problem statement, including all known information, and unknowns to be found
- Free-body diagrams, where appropriate
- Any formula that is used - write the formula first, then substitute in the known information
- Show all work
- The answer must be boxed
- Include all units, direction arrows, etc, as appropriate
-
Neatness is important. If I can't
read it, or if I have trouble following the flow of the solution, it will
be marked wrong.
-
An incorrect answer will be an automatic 1 point deduction in addition to any other deductions that are made.
HELPFUL
TIPS FOR HOMEWORK
-
This course is very homework intensive.
Start the assignments as soon as the material is covered in class.
DO NOT wait until the last minute.
-
Grades on homework problems will be based
on many things, including diagrams, correct selection of formulas, substitution
of correct values into the formulas, neatness, correct format, math,
interpretation of results, etc. The correct answer is only part of
the grade, and not showing all your work could result in a failling grade,
even if all the answers are correct.
-
Even though not all of the problems will
be graded, it is highly recommended that you do all of it. There is
no guarantee that the test problems will be similar to the graded
homework.
-
Do each problem on your own. If you
work in a group, your thinking will not be fully challenged, and you may
find the tests difficult. If you copy someone elses work, you will
not learn anything.
-
If you do work in a group, do as much of
the work as possible on your own before talking to the group, and then, only
get ideas how to proceed. Do not just copy.
-
Set a reasonable time limit for each problem.
If you can't get the answer in that amount of time, set the problem
aside, and move on to another one. After you have tried all the problems,
then ask for help with the troublesome ones.
-
Work slow and deliberately. Rushing
things will cause careless mistakes, and can cause more time to be taken
in the long run trying to find your errors.
-
Keep up with the reading
assignments.
-
Use the homework problems in the manner
in which they are intended, as learning tools.
-
Most of the topics in this course build
upon previous material. If you don't understand something, get help
immediately. If you get behind, it will be very difficult to catch
up later.
