Winning
has been a tradition with the Lady Spikers. The Lady Cougars have been
state champions seven times. The season extends from September to November.
Fall of 1998 began a new era in Penn State Altoona sports programs. An
NCAA Division III schedule replaced the former junior and community college
schedule. Participating as a member of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate
Conference affords us quality competition with other four-year institutions.
Students in most major areas of study can remain at Altoona for at least
two years before transferring to University Park and some, all four years.
In only the second sseason of playing in the NCAA Division III Allegheny
Mountain Collegiate Conference, the '99 team accepted the challenge to surpass
the 1998 inaugural season of 7 wins and 14 losses. With a returning
nucleus of 3 talented sophomores and 2 juniors, their leadership proved
to be a driving force in the season's overall record of 14 wins and 12
losses. Starting mostly freshmen is never an easy task when they
are matched against upperclasswomen who have played together for more seasons;
these freshmen handled the adversity with courage and determination.
The results are getting more positive as each season ends. Barely
missing a berth to the League Final 4 Championship (we were 5th) affords
the challenge and the goal for 2000. Practice begins with an
organizational/practice meeting on August 20th at 10:00 AM in the Adler
Gym. All former high school players interested in pursuing volleyball should
attend this meeting. For further information, contact Coach Hedrick-Sheaffer
