Policy Player
Assignment—100 Points
Due: February 18
The purpose of this
assignment is to help you become familiar with lobbying organizations related
to your career, gain a better understanding of the political process, learn
more about current regulatory issues and their impact on businesses and
consumers, and give you more practice finding relevant information on the web.
Choose TWO industry
organizations and TWO consumer organizations (for a total of four) and answer
the following questions for each organization.
NOTE: DO NOT cut and paste answers
from the webpage or simply paraphrase.
Put the answer in your own words to demonstrate that you understand the
answer!
1.
Name of
organization and URL
2.
Who
does this organization represent?
3.
What is
its mission or purpose?
4.
Discuss
one telecom policy issue the organization has an opinion on.
a.
Summarize
the issue
b.
What is
the organization’s position/recommendation on this issue?
c.
Is
their position “pro-regulation” or “pro-deregulation”?
d.
How
will the organization’s members benefit if its policy position is adopted by
regulators?
e.
Based
on our discussion of economics, do you think the government should be involved
in this issue? In other words, could the
market solve this problem on its own?
Why or why not?
To find
organizations, you can use the legal
links on the class website, but these are only a few of the hundreds of
relevant organizations. I encourage you
to look for other organizations related to the industry you are most interested
in. For example, if you want to work in
the music industry, try the Recording Industry Association of America, National
Music Publishers Association, or the Future of Music Coalition. While it may take more effort, at leas you will
be learning information related to your career.
This will help you immensely with job and internship interviews.
Make sure you
follow the class Guidelines
for Written Work.
