Matt
Jackson teaches copyright, telecommunications
policy, communications law, management, and broadcast/cable programming at Penn State
University. His research focuses on how copyright law shapes
communication networks and free speech.
He also conducts research on the First Amendment and legal issues
affecting the Internet and other telecommunications
industries. In 2003, he received the Deans’ Award for Integrated Scholarship
for Excellence in Teaching, Research, and Service from the College of Communications
at Penn State University.
Professor
Jackson has published articles in numerous outlets including Journal of Communication, Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic
Media, Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal,
Hastings Communications and Entertainment Law Journal (COMM/ENT), Federal
Communications Law Journal, Communications Law and Policy, and The Georgetown Journal of International
Affairs. He also writes the chapter
on cable regulation for the textbook Communication
and the Law. He presents his
research at numerous national and international conferences each year including
special presentations at People’s University in Beijing,
China and King’s College
School of Law in London, England. Matt currently serves as chair of the Law and
Policy division of the International Communication Association and as
Department Head of the Department of Telecommunications at Penn State.
Matt
received his Ph.D. in Mass Communication at Indiana University-Bloomington in
1998. His dissertation was honored with
the Kenneth Harwood Outstanding Dissertation Award from the Broadcast Education
Association. He earned his M.A. degree
with Distinction and B.S. degree with
High Honors from the College of Journalism
and Communications at the University
of Florida. His professional experience includes work in
both commercial and public radio, where he earned regional awards from the Associated
Press for his radio features. Before
commencing his radio career, Professor Jackson founded his own music management
agency, Fervent Music.
