Grading Policy:

In order to earn an A in this class all assignments must be completed and on time. In addition, the work should demonstrate an ongoing process of self reflective synthesis of course content and evidence of transformative thinking and learning.

You are guaranteed a B in this class if all assignments are completed and on time and you have not missed more than 2 class sessions.

You are guaranteed a C in this class if two-thirds of the assignments are completed and on time and you have not missed more than 4 class sessions.

You are guaranteed a D in this class if half of the assignments are completed and on time and you have not missed more than 6 class sessions.

 Course Projects & Evaluation Criteria
During the course of this class there are a total of 10 assignments as listed below.

1. EMAIL Communication Due by 9/12 (part of global network grade--see #10).

2. 15% ARTMAKING Project: to either (a) combine computer technologies with traditional artmaking technologies (i.e., weaving, printmaking, painting, etc. - in student's area of emphasis) or (b) to create art with computer technology. Evaluation criteria: Form (static or dynamic) conveys content/meaning. Art is a visual metaphor "metaphors are the paintbrushes our brains use to turn abstract . . . concepts into awareness and understanding" (Simons, T., June 2001, Presentations, p. 44). Content conveyed with digital form/process tool metaphors--layers, inverses, gradient image merges, and filters; and process involved basic actions of scale changes, rotations, and color selection. Due 10/3.
 
3. 15% INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY Project: Create a 10 minute PowerPoint linear presentation of a topic that could be used in the Artery practicum for an art unit of study or some other teaching setting. Project combines skills of using a digital camera, scanning slides and flatbed images, use of PhotoShop (understanding different formats and memory saving tricks), & PowerPoint. 4. 5% SEMIOTIC PowerPoint Group Interpretative Project: Based on the Sunday (9/23) FIELD TRIP create a PowerPoint slide for a class PowerPoint linear presentation that visually interprets the meaning to you of Oliver Herring's performance. Use digital cameras & camcorders to capture context to develop your visual response as semiotic interpretations. Due 10/12
 
5. 10% INSTRUCTIONAL WEBQUEST group project: WebQuests (Internet Research) - group project to develop unit of study as a WebQuest. Due 10/26.
 
6. 15% GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION DESIGN Project: Graphic Layout (QuarkXpress) Newsletter to parents and community about your art curriculum or a flyer announcing your students' exhibition. Due 10/31.
 
7. 15% PROFESSIONAL SELF-PRESENTATION WEB SITE Project: Create a Web site (DreamWeaver & HTML scripting principles, use of digital camera) - includes resume, philosophy of teaching, your art, artist statement, personal landscape, and description of self to obtain desired job. Due 11/16.
 
8. 15% INTERACTIVITY Project (HyperStudio & video):
(1) Nonlinear/interface design criteria developed by students in 2000 which were consensually agreed on to be:
 
1. Continuity between visuals, sound, and concept.
2. Users need to be able to reach all links and locations with ease.
3. Message should engage thought and invite the viewer to participate willingly.
4. Viewers synthesize differences to develop their own interpretation.
5. Project draws the user in and grabs their attention immediately.
 
(2) Criteria for pedagogical approach: a postmodern multicultural orientation involving intertextuality, intervisuality, and intersubjectivity.
 
(3) Instructional presentation criteria based in Information Processing Theory.

9. 5% GRADING Project: Excel Spreadsheets for Your Gradebook (Concepts applied: absolutes/constants and relative variables) Due 11/14.
 
10. 5% GLOBAL NETWORKING Project: Virtual Chats (asynchronistic vs synchronistic) participation in (1) ArtsEdNet Listserv (due 9/19), (2) asynchronistic threaded discussion post of critique of art lesson/program on the web (Due 10/5) and interactive aesthetic criteria.(Due 10/31--changed to due 11/7)
