Using a Scanner

These directions work specifically using the scanner in 105 Ferguson. Setups in other labs are similar, but not identical.

Make sure the scanner is turned on (check for the lights in front). The switch is a button on the front.

Open the scanner and place the image you want to scan face down on the bed.

Open Photoshop (it is under Multimedia in the Programs).

In the File pulldown menu got to Import, choose Twain 32 (or Twain Aquire in some labs, or directly to Scanner Silverfast (Epson) in the Patterson Lab).

If it doesn't do it automatically, click on Preview.

In Preview, shape the outline box to fit the area you want to scan. If the image is going be used on the Web the resolution doesn't need to be very high, unless original will be enlarged several times.

Click on Final.

After you have made any changes and adjustments you want in Photoshop, go to Image Size under the Images pulldown menu.

Set resolution at 72pixels/inch.

Set Width and Height to the size you want to appear on your web site,

Click OK.

Return to File pull down menu and Save As and choose JPEG (*.JPG, *JPE) if you want the JPEG file format - the usual one for photographic images. (When you save it you will be asked to pick a setting. The low setting makes a smaller file but a less good image than the high setting - often the difference is difficult to see.)

If you want the GIF format, it is best for flat areas of color, go the Image pulldown menu, then go to Mode and pick Indexed Color.

Open up the File menu and go to Save As and pick CompuServ GIF.

The files in either format can now be inserted in your Web site.
